The Olympics begin next week. NBC says they are going to cover all sports on 7 Networks. Nice if it works NBC Olympics

That seems like a lot of coverage time but it's actually rather pathetic. Probably only about 120 hours of actual event coverage and the rest is just highlights, in depth interviews about people who we do not know and the history about that person competing and training for years and years to get to this event. Then we see the tape delayed event in which there is that same person we just saw an in depth interview and history report on in one of the top three positions. Story Link: new 1, old 2.In Europe they have 12,000 hours of coverage where as NBC will only show 1,210 and that will be clips of key events and brief daily highlights. Even though they have twelve thousand hours in Europe they still can't cover all of it. So what is one tenth compared to that? Which brings me to BBC's live online coverage of the Olympics which we as Americans cannot/not allowed to watch because the big NBC media conglomerate has a contract with the organizer of the Olympics for our territory and does not want us to have any other access to the Olympics other than their specific narrow view upon it. It's what, 793 million that got NBC this territory we call America? How petty is that, when this social event is restricted and they wonder why the youth of today are not watching as much? And instead are increasingly watching the X Games? Limiting access to it is the same as destroying the social and cultural meaning of the Olympics all together. All this done so the organizers of the merely commercialized Olympic Games does not hurt the value of TV rights. Where a big media powerhouse like NBC has domain rights for the land of the free and home of the beloved corporations.

The HD "coverage" is the most pathetic of all. They were/are touting the Olympics in high definition. Right now they think the clearer pictures is enough for me to watch. The image is impressive, but they are showing seriously tape-delayed coverage on a loop. On Sat, they showed the opening ceremonies for 27 straight hours! To say the HD coverage is disappointing would be an understatement.

This is why the Olympics don't mean anything anymore. It's all just a big advertisement for everything. "The official douch of the 2004 Summer Olympics." No one seems to be as into it as they used to.

That's the thing. I didn't spend 3 grand for my TV. It's not the lightest thing in the world, but it gets the job done. I feel bad for those who got the expensive TV to watch the Olympics among other programs. The Olympic coverage on HD, and in fact generally, has been extremely disappointing. Thankfully there are other options (albeit limited) for hi-def.

There has already been tutu-diving. Kristopher posted the article in another thread.

I have something that beats HD...life. Real life. I'm all for having a nice TV but this HD stuff is a little out of hand. Most people want HD for movies and there are no HD DVDs yet. Not until the Blue-Ray discs comes out. But satelitte? HD Jay Leno? Yeah, I'm gonna rush out for that!

I know there life. But sometimes I need to remove myself from the day-to-day grind of working, and relax. Others read, sleep, play sports, etc. I do all that and watch TV. Yeah call me a potato if you like, but it's nice to watch all the HD shows about Africa and the oceans. One day I'll travel to those places, but until then the TV is all I've got.

Nope. I get it through my cable provider. It adds $5 to the monthly bill, so it's not bad. I really wish they had Discovery HD. They have incredible programs from various parts of the world. But you're right, I didn't buy it for Jay Leno. I needed a new TV and it wasn't that much more than normal TV. Yeah it's not the newest plasma sets, but I wasn't going to waste that much money on one of those.

1 minor problem. Our Great and Noble Government has decreed that HDTV Shall Be The Law Of The Land within the next few years
Also satellite ain't generally available in high-rise environments

I would love one of the plasma displays. I was looking at some LCD displays but the refresh rate on those is still too low to make it a viable option for hometheater use. Too much blurring during high action scenes.
plasma's biggest problems have been the VERY high price tag (which is coming down to reality) and the fact that it can't produce true black or blacker-than-black. But they are getting better with that. I remember when they first came out Farouja was the only one that made them and they sold them for $13,000. Now I bet all the people that bought those 5 years ago are kicking themselves because you can get one for $2000.

LOL, just checking. It's like the Philips commercial way back when plasmas were just being introduced. They hung their set on the ceiling.
