Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, will begin selling portable music players for as much as 80 percent less than Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod.

The Microsoft-branded devices will "look and feel" as good as the iPod for as little as $50, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN at Microsoft Corp., at the Goldman Sachs fifth annual Internet Conference in Las Vegas. The iPod sells for $249 to $499.

Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., will release a number of music players when it launches its online music service later this year, giving customers more choices than Apple, Mehdi said.

right. As with all of Microsofts products, it will be buggy as hell.

I have seen stuff that is by other companies then microsoft that is just as buggy but that does not get held against the entire company

You got to admit if youv'e used Windows since the old 3.1 days that microsoft has usally released better and better versions of windows with each release. The only mess was the release of Windows ME and that release really made alot of people hate them.

To say XP is buggy and lumping it in with the all microsoft products are buggy statement is really a misnomer, as the only time XP gives a user problems is when they try to use old software or old drivers that is not certified with the xp operating system.

If you don't use xp and use an older os then I guess your making that statement based on the older version of windows your using.

If your using mac or linux and making the statement then you have not used XP long enough to judge all microsoft products as buggy since the statement you made would just be a prejudicial statement towards microsoft in general.

Sorry for the rant, but I get tired of people running down the windows os ,saying it is buggy when it is usally due to old software, bad drivers, or people trying to tweak their setup and blaming their messing up the os on windows being flakey.

I'm using winXP. Security releases are late, buggy, or dont show up at all. Theres so many holes that they spend more time fixing them than making the next version of windows so the next version is as buggy as the last, they just change the gui.

I am using XP as well and have no security problem, probably because I don't rely on microsoft to make the patches if some one else has already said how to fix it.

As for the statement that all they do is change the gui , you know that is untrue in the long run or else I would not have had to get rid of all my extended dos games that used to run great on windows 98. If it was just a gui change then those dos games would still be playable.

My self , I don't expect microsoft to hold my proverbial hand and make my computer secure and instead install my own security and don't use stuff like p2p programs and such that are a major securty risk in of themselves.

Like I said before , I am tired of everyone bashing windows xp when it's alot better then what i ever used before.

The reason I am so vocal on this subject is because I used to use Windows ME and that changed my whole perspective on the whole windows being insecure and microsoft bashing. At that time I would have agreed with you, but xp is a great os . I have yet to have it crash as like I said I don't install old software anymore or bad drivers.

As for the security holes you mentioned , that comes with every OS and the only reason Microsoft is singled out more then linux or mac is due to the fact that most everyone uses windows.

You may want to try out the bigfix program I mentioned in the useful programs thread if you still want to argue that xp has holes as the bigfix program does fix find some patches that windows update does not recommend to most users. If/when you install big fix, I would suggest unchecking the box that asks if you want to run it each time windows starts as it is not needed.

As much as I dislike M$, if they made a decent mp3 player comparable to iPod for that cost, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I meant that all it seems that they do is change the gui, but i shall also say they change some other stuff too. My point that I was making is that they dont fix security holes... They could find and fix them BEFORE they release it. And I have had winxp crash a few times. Less than 98, but still, it has happened. I never used ME.
