Well I usally buy the dvd as well dizzy but think what this could do for the dvd industry The reason now for the whole blue ray versus high def dvd format is to create bigger sized dvd types to hold more content since shows encoded with hi def encoding are usally alot bigger then normal dvd encoding. If the company has some truth in this compression technology , they could license their compression tech to the dvd industry and make it so high definition dvds fit on normal dvds roms and put the brakes on the whole blue ray debate Not to mention cutting down how many cds ship with season long dvd sets like firefly Think of the promises this has as the whole series of shows that used to take 4 normal dvds could be shrunk down to 1 or 2 would really be nice. They said they could shrink a 700 meg file down to 50 megs with this scheme. Doing the math, I think that is over a 90% compression ratio which would be great, especially if it could be worked in to streaming technology. Think of bandwidth folks could save if that was possible Dial uppers could actually watch shows over the net without worry And don't forget folks like me that record shows with their computer that are about 3 gigs per hour long shows. As it is now I use divx to shrink my shows to about 2/3rds of that to about 1 gig of space but if what they say is true I could shrink that size even further using their scheme I hope the company is not bsing folks as that type compression scheme would have alot of uses just like mp3 did over wav formats

The only problem is that if you were to be able to get high-def quality shrunk down to fit on a standard DVD player then you would need a new DVD player that could play the movie. It would have to know how to read that new format. Unless they can shrink it using the EV compression and then reencode it using MPEG2 or 4. I think that would reinflate the filesize back up too high.

I think something stinks about this. LEXINGTON Father Whose Son Died After He Left Him In Hot Vehicle Is Sentenced To Probation, Rehab The man whose nine-month-old son died after he left him for hours in a hot car last August was sentenced in a Lexington courtroom Friday afternoon to five years of probation and a six-month stay in a rehab center. Leon T. Jewell, 36, was originally charged with murder in the death of his son, Daniel, on August 1, but pleaded guilty to a lesser second-degree manslaughter charge in March. The boy was found by a family member in a locked sport-utility vehicle outside the home. With the guilty plea, the Commonwealth's attorney recommended a seven-year sentence to the judge. On Friday, that seven-year sentence was probated. Jewell must also stays in custody until he is accepted and admitted into a Mississippi rehab center, where he will have to stay for six months. A 90-day stay at the center costs $20,000. Jewell's family has agreed to pay. A search warrant obtained by LEX 18 News shows that police believed that drugs or alcohol played a role in the infant's death. In the search warrant, detectives outline behind the scenes activities - permission to search the home, the vehicle, even the accused. The evidence collected was listed individually, and with great detail. Investigators found baby clothes downstairs in the home, three empty beer cans - two found in trash cans inside, one in the garbage outside - and three empty bottles of vodka found in the trash outside the house. Police also seized three bottles of medicine found in the bathroom. The warrant ends by listing a detailed description of DUI kits used - all specimens taken from Jewell. The coroner determined that Daniel Jewell died from hyperthermia. Hyperthermia is an acute condition resulting from excessive exposure to heat. The high temperature was 94 August 1 in Lexington. The General Assembly stiffened penalties for leaving children unattended in cars after a 1999 case that resulted in the death of a child. Bryan Puckett, the 11-month-old son of William and Michelle Puckett of Winchester, died after his baby sitter left him in a closed car on an 82-degree day in Lexington. Karen Murphy, the baby sitter, was sentenced to 13 years in prison. Murphy has twice tried to appeal the verdict, but lost both times.
