Our son is upstairs currently strumming at his guitar, then he decides to come down and demonstright :sp: how hes going to be a rock star. I dont think so on his basic equipment.

I'm pretty good at the radio, CD player and back in the day I played a good 8 track but I never could play any real instruments.
I hope your son has a good time with his guitar even if he never makes it big in the music world.

My daughter says she saw a 8 track tape in an antique store once.

Bryan, If you are serious you need to do some research. You need to know were it all started.

Well no takers so I'll tell you all my instrumental history. Started with good ol nasty voice then moved to piano, Got so tired of my mom forcing me to Practice, Practice, Practice. So I gave it up. Moved to the flute in J. High, but you know what I found out that all the girls wanted to play the flute so for two years I was one of thirteen flute players. Mind you our J. High band was about only 30 some kids I gave in for a while. Started high school and wanted to be in band and have fun with my brother and his groupies so I played the cybols. It was such a challenge. I finched out my instermental carerr as a French Horn player. Loved it then. Cant remember a thing about it now, so back to the piano I have returned. And I still stink at it.

Not the band bunch of groupies, but I guess you were a party hardy groupie.

I was into rock music back in school. I could bang two rocks together and sometimes I didn't hurt my fingers.

Iíve been at this a looooong time. My dad played as well and bought me all the toy drums I could stand. Itíll never make me rich but I have some great moments to recall. Iíve been on a few recordings, did a commercial for Purina, taught a little, and even opened for Charlie Daniels. What fun!

Along time ago I played the flute and saxophone.

I played the sax as well. Mine broke and it was going to cost to much to fix so I haven't played since. I miss playing.

A SL1200. Cool. I have a Dual 550 back in the other room. Lots of vinyl around here still.

I only wish I had those...SL1200MK5G....I have Stanton STR8-100's.

I used to sell SL1200MK-II's and Denon's. I think we had some Stanton come through, too. Lots of ATUS as well. Lots of fun getting them to work on old floors with a lot of traffic!

Just yesterday I stopped off at the music store in town (which is owned by the lead singer in my band) and saw this cart in the middle of the floor. I knew he had bought it a long time ago when we hosted that Colgate talent show contest thing to move big equipment by himself. I haven't seen it since.

These things are radically expensive and I haven't seen him use it in... Forever. So I shot him a deal (cheap deal) and he took it! Wow! Now I have a legendary multi-cart!

Looks like I can take my entire drumset from car to stage in three trips! So cool!

Awesome those things are handy to have for other things besides drums too.

I used to play stage drums in 7th grade, but moved out of state for my 8th grade year , and they only had snare drum in their band class, so i quit playing.
I had a friend that had a set of drums and I sat down to play( 19 years ago) and found out my hands still worked but both feet wanted to do the same beat , couldnt make my feet do different beats on the hihats and tom tom..LOL
I could still play wipe out , hawaii 5 O theme but that was all .

It took me a while to convince people I actually had a set. Then when they caught on they'd ask the number one question...

"Are you any good?"

Sheesh. That's best left for you to decide. Not me.

I remember when I was young, my mom would always let me stay up late when Johnny Crason would have Buddy Rich on, as he always played on his show, Johnny wasnt to shabby either.

Buddy! Amazing skill but a poopie of a person. He had a foul temper, but don't let that distract you from his playing. Wow!

I also sit up straighter for Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl, and Vinnie Colaiuta.

Tommy's spinning cage brought back memories of Keith Emerson's (Emerson, Lake, And Palmer} spinning grand piano. I thought both were going to loose it, but they didn't.

Alex and myself both love Paiste cymbals. At least he did last time. They're going out on tour again with Sammy so we'll see if he kept them.

I remember Jason filling his dad's drum throne at what I consider the only true Zeppelin reunion for Live Aid (I think). That night included John, the original bass player who has gone missing on all appearances since then. Very moving.

I'm Izzy, and Rod and I used to work together at this really lame second shift job. We met there and I guess it's going on about 8 years that we've known each other. I moved on to other things, but he and I have always stayed in contact and I was even in his wedding to Deb. I've been married about 2 years now, and I'm a guitarist. Here's a photo...

Well, that must be what spurred on the custom bass drum heads. I remember the one he had on Saturday Night Live. Ya hoo!

You know, I should have included you in the "Musical Buddies" thread. I didn't think about it until I saw the picture. In all this time this is a first. We're registered on the same form!

Hahaha, that's true, never thought of that! It's cool we can both be on a forum now.

And Yep, Joey always had some wild custom bass drum heads. The one that sticks out in my mind is from the "Pump" tour, he had a drum head that was painted with the girl from the "Love in an Elevator" album single cover... she was basically just painted from the waist up, in an elevator, with this guy with big buggy eyes looking at her. She had just two tassles placed rather strategically, and when he hit the first note of the song the tassles would fly off the drumhead... leaving little to the imagination, LOL!

He had another with a painting of his face superimposed over a circus sideshow guy, stretching out his cheeks to about 5 or six inches... that may be the one you're thinking of from SNL. He used that one on the "Get a Grip" tour.

I hadn't heard about the gas station incident. Scary!

I'm going back out in a little bit. I have the drumset unloaded but I haven't put anything together yet.

Tell 'ya what. I'll take the little spy camera with me and post some pictures of the "erector set" going together.

Well, It's all together and ready to go. First I had to bring in the gear. Three trips with the cart. So cool!

Then time to start unloading the stuff out of it's cases.

They usually leave me a open slot big enough to fit in, if I'm lucky. I start with the bass drum to locate the center of the set, more or less.

Then the foundation goes up. The rack system that everything mounts too.

Then all the individual holders clamp on and the mounted drums go in place.

Then it's time to attach the cymbals and position the microphones.

And it's ready for the show!

I hope the gig went well. Wish I could hear you guys Live someday.....hey Deb, we got a visitor......LOL, that would be funny.

Deb's back keeps her away from most of my gigs but she does venture out to a few. This gig went OK. Strange crowd. We were mostly ignored until the end.

Oh, and the fog machine was set up and placed where it pretty much blasted me first before it spread out around the stage. Jerry said "Looks like someone's blowing smoke up your @$$"!

Ah, a gig and I missed it, had to work. Well, the first real paycheck will be coming in, so you're going to have to let me know when you guys are playing next. That way when my wife and I get some cash we can come see you... if I don't work that night.

The drumset looks cool, just like I remember it, and a lot better than the little kit I have for backup drummers.

What does your band usually play? a little bit of everything or does it depend on the crowd ? If you mentioned it before i must of missed it somewhere, or my mind is slipping and forgot . Sorry

The two brothers who are the namesake have somewhat different ideas. One likes the blues and blues rock, the other likes southern classic rock. Our set list is somewhere in the middle. They both started out singing country with their dad and some of those things will pop up as well.

We usually go with our set list and change things as the night goes on if we need to.

does it include " OHHHHHHH Black Betty -bam-a-lam"

Its been awhile since I did something a tad creative.
I did a Big mail box for a friend for christmas ....I painted it pearl white, with Red flames on it , came out pretty cool. I need to find a pic of the one I did 2 years ago and post it .

The tutu was jims idea. The camera was Harolds. I came up with the tying people up. Jim and Harold vetoed the handcuffs and we are all into the laughter

I had a offer today from someone who I can only call a band manager. He organizes and books two or three other ones and he's starting a new one. Problem is this band will be the working one. Every Friday and Saturday, all holidays, a lot of week nights, and sometimes two a day.

The money might be OK once the band gains a reputation and can get the scale up but the time might be rough to do. I'd almost have to quit the Abyss and then I don't think I'd get ahead. I don't know... Still thinking about it.

Sounds good , but can make a living doing this ? Or would you still work where your at now , AND play with the band?

I don't think I could. And I couldn't make enough to replace the job now without playing 4 to 5 nights a week. Somehow I don't think I could pull this off.
