EMI releases Brazilian DRM CDs that totally hose their customers Looks like EMI is taking notes from Sony's playbook Brazilian mega-star Marisa Monte's new CDs from EMI ("Infinito Particular" and "Universo ao Meu Redor") come with DRM that can't be uninstalled, and requires you to "agree" to a contract that isn't published in Portuguese. Even if you disagree, the malware is installed. The DRM blocks you from playing the CD on Linux and MacOS, and from loading it onto an iPod. This, just as the Brazilian government has launched a Computers for All initiative to distribute 1,000,000 Linux PCs, seems particularly contemptuous of the Brazilian people. Ronaldo sez,

Woman With Perfect Memory Baffles Scientists March 20, 2006 -- James McGaugh is one of the world's leading experts on how the human memory system works. But these days, he admits he's stumped. McGaugh's journey through an intellectual purgatory began six years ago when a woman now known only as AJ wrote him a letter detailing her astonishing ability to remember with remarkable clarity even trivial events that happened decades ago. Give her any date, she said, and she could recall the day of the week, usually what the weather was like on that day, personal details of her life at that time, and major news events that occurred on that date. Like any good scientist, McGaugh was initially skeptical. But not anymore. "This is real," he says.

Afghan Man Prosecuted for Converting
An Afghan man who allegedly converted from Islam to Christianity is being prosecuted in a Kabul court and could be sentenced to death, a judge said Sunday.
The defendant, Abdul Rahman, was arrested last month after his family went to the police and accused him of becoming a Christian, Judge Ansarullah Mawlavezada told Associated Press in an interview. Such a conversion would violate the country's Islamic laws.
Rahman, who is believed to be 41, was charged with rejecting Islam when his trial started last week, the judge said.
During the hearing, the defendant allegedly confessed that he converted from Islam to Christianity 16 years ago when he was 25 and working as a medical aid worker for Afghan refugees in neighboring Pakistan, Mawlavezada said.
Afghanistan's constitution is based on Shariah law, which states that any Muslim who rejects their religion should be sentenced to death.
"We are not against any particular religion in the world. But in Afghanistan, this sort of thing is against the law," the judge said. "It is an attack on Islam. ... The prosecutor is asking for the death penalty."
The prosecutor, Abdul Wasi, said the case was the first of its kind in Afghanistan.
He said that he had offered to drop the charges if Rahman changed his religion back to Islam, but the defendant refused.
Mawlavezada said he would rule on the case within two months.
Afghanistan is a deeply conservative society and 99 percent of its 28 million people are Muslim. The rest are mainly Hindus.
An update to the news above caught my attentions today
The Afghan man who faced the death penalty for his conversion to Christianity has disappeared into hiding in Kabul, just hours after his release from prison. Italy says it may give Abdul Rahman asylum since an Afghan court dropped charges against him.

www.capitalnews9.comSenator stripped of perks for "inappropriate conduct"Updated: 4/4/2006 12:50:02 PM By: Associated Press A state lawmaker's questionable conduct in recent weeks has cost her nearly $10,000 and the use of a car. That's according to Senate Minority Leader David Paterson, who has taken away Senator Ada Smith's committee and vehicle perks because of her "consistent pattern of inappropriate conduct." The Democrat from Queens faces a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault after she was accused of throwing hot coffee in the eyes of a female member of her Albany staff. Smith -- who has denied the charges -- is due in court Thursday. Meanwhile, the Albany County sheriff's office reports that Smith was ordered off a United Airlines plane at Albany International Airport last month after getting into an argument with a flight attendant. Smith has had other run-ins with authorities, including an incident in which she allegedly bit the hand of a New York City officer during a traffic dispute. This is disturbing DETROIT -- A 6-year-old boy's 911 call for help was thought to be a prank, but the call was real and the boy's mother died, Local 4 reported. Robert Turner (pictured) called 911 to get help for his mother, Sherel Turner, 46, whom he found lying unconscious on the kitchen floor of their Detroit apartment in February, the station reported. "Then I had felt her tummy. She wasn't breathing. Then I had called 911," said Robert. "I told them to send an emergency truck right now." 911 Operator: "911. What's the problem?" Robert: "My mom has passed out." The 911 operator, however, did not take him seriously and told him to stop playing on the phone, the station reported. 911 Operator: "Where's the grownups at?" Robert: (Inaudible) 911 Operator: "Let me speak to her before I send the police over there." "I tried to tell them she wouldn't talk," said Robert to Local 4.
