You hit the nail on the head. They behead our people and we get in trouble for having a little fun. It just isn't right.

I saw a poll yesterday on Fox News that said the majority of Americans think the media is making to much out of the prison 'abuse' scandal and generally casting a negative light on the war.

Found in a newsletter This would be so cool if they could restore those old recordings and actually be able to listen to a speech from lincoln given in 1863

There are unconfirmed rumors abounding, that Abraham Lincoln made a voice recording during the Civil War in 1863. Also, there are cylinder recordings that are said to contain the voices of Queen Victoria, poets Alfred Tennyson, Walt Whitman, Florence Nightingale, Sarah Bernhardt and Germany's WWI leader Kaiser Wilhelm. These recordings will speak again, as scientists perfect techniques to recover the sound from recordings that are far too delicate to be played on any mechanical device. California university scientists, using special microscopes will scan the grooves - and software will convert those shapes into sound. The project is backed by the Library of Congress, which has 128 million old recordings which need to be transcribed to modern-day, durable formats.

They can scan old vinyl and brittle records with lasers to play them. It's very expensive but for archival purposes it's necessary. If this works and it's true it would be a find.

I could put this in the Ancient Audio thread but it's more applicable here. This is the laser turntable.

I don't know about this one, folks.

I heard this guy talk and he has his stuff together. Over a 3 hour interview he told what he knew and didn't put any speculation or theory in. He only talked about the evidence he has seen. And he says to search the evidence yourself and links to it when he can. Make up your own mind. I like that approach.

You can believe it or not. Or you may just have a seed of doubt. All of that is fine. I don't post this 'cause I believe it, only that it's credible (on it's own merits) and does say something about a awful event in history. I wrestled all weekend about if I should put this here or not, but I think we can take it.

Is there another story to tell about 911?

I bet this is on all the news tomorrow.

Robbers Urged to Care for 'Scream'

OSLO, Aug. 23 - A day after the brazen daylight robbery of "The Scream" and a second Expressionist masterpiece by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, museum officials begged the robbers on Monday to show greater care for the treasures than they did while wrenching them free from the wall and smashing their frames.

Picture of the famous 'Scream' and the story can bed found here.

I read someplace that Lincoln had a high, twangy voice. Not at all what you'd imagine, and not how he's usually portrayed as speaking.

BUT I seriously don't think they had recording back then,.

Melanie,
neither did I, but I took this from a website about him -

1887-1890 Made major improvements on the brown wax and black wax cylinder phonograph. Obtained over eighty related patents, while establishing a very extensive commercial business in the manufacture and sale of phonographs and records, including associated dictating machines, "shaveable" records, and shaving machines.

Notice it says made improvements That means that it was being used by him before that time even if it was crude .

Except Lincoln died in 1865. Hang on, let me Google a sec....

.....ok, Edison invented it in 1877. Actually, I've heard the very first recording, "Mary Had A Little Lamb". It's housed in Greenfield Village, in Michigan. (Google is a wonderful thing!)

I have heard that recording as well If the lincoln recording does exist, it probably was made with an early prototype of edisons dictaphone . I think that is what it was called back then. At one time we had one of those republished catalogs that showed what sears sold way back in the 1800s and it was fun to look at all that old stuff but it is missing now

I researched further and from the wording , they said he made a voice recording , but did not say it was a cylinder recording that Edison was using at the time. I am guessing it was a "phonautograph" recording that was made, that was before Edison perfected a recording on a cylinder as it was in use as early as 1857. More information is at http://history.acusd.edu/gen/recording/precursors.html

I must believe you! But I think if we had his voice recorded, we'd have heard by now. It's interesting to follow up - let us know if you find anythingmore!

And how exactly do you think you are going to get it from me? I shall not relinquish it and if you dare try to take it away, I'll only go back before you had even the faintest thought of stealing it from me and dose you with some extra strength glisten..

Actually even with today's tech, usually you do not know how another person speaks. Their accent and way of speaking is mostly lost except for the occasional phrases that certain people use a lot. Still, you could talk with a high squeaky voice or I with a deep down one. We wouldn't know within the medium we happen to interact. This is the same with a lot of people over the internet.
