I switched the name server we use here from the server owner (vertexhost.com) to my own nameservers at highlandhosting.com.

I sort of think the issues we've been having here was due to funkiness of the other nameserver which I believe is away in another state from our webserver in Vegas. I hope this is the problem. This wasn't easy to wrap my head around as it is/was an intermittent failure.

Please let me know if you see any improvement or worsening or any comments at all here.

thankyousign

I believe this is the issue as well. Ever since I added like 15 dns providers for my computer, the errors here went away for me. Seems something would change and some of the dns records wouldn't be updated quick enough. With the many more providers now, each will try if the previous one has an error.

Are they like the service offered by openDNS?

No filtering, which is something I suspect you want. And if a page is messed up it'll return an error page instead providing a search page. I tried many dns options, including openDNS and after a while each would end up having problems here. Only until I added many more did the errors go away.

One could probably keep openDNS the first option, and then add others behind it as a backup in case openDNS doesn't see it. Though I'm not sure it will work correctly since they redirect to the search page if there is an error instead of giving back an error page. Not sure if that will cause it to not try the next dns option after openDNS.

Not as much as the filtering as I hadn't considered that you could use so many different nameservers as an end user like that.

Some suggest you have ten to fifteen. Trallyus found a program that will show you the fastest dns providers for you. OpenDNS was close to the top for me.

I might just do that for the laptop away from home.

The board just got lost for a few minutes. I wonder if that's the new DNS propagating?

Trallyus can't get in because OpenDNS doesn't have this forum in its cache yet.

http://www.opendns.com/support/cache/

It has www.haroldandrews.com but not www.forum.haroldandrews.com

Trying with many different proxies, and I can't access this forum with them, but can access the main domain. Apparently one of the many dns I have on my computer works and thus I am able to browse here.

http://guide.opendns.com/?url=www.forum.haroldandrews.com%2Fubbthreads.php%2Fubb%2Fcfrm&servfail

Nameservers for www.forum.haroldandrews.com:
* ns1.highlandhosting.com returned (NORECORDS)
* ns2.highlandhosting.com returned (NORECORDS)

Not sure if this means it simply hasn't updated, or that the dns nameservers at highlandhosting doesn't have a pointer for the subdomain forum. When I changed the nameservers on my domain, my subdomains wouldn't work until I readded the domain in the control panel settings or changed the nameservers for it there as well. Then it updated, otherwise it would use the old nameservers or failed.

I'm able to get here right now because I changed my hosts file so that my computer didn't even try looking checking the dns for this domain or rather subdomain of forum.

In windows 7:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Inside it I put

208.92.161.83 www.forum.haroldandrews.com
208.92.161.83 forum.haroldandrews.com

I see you two have the run of the board. Those DNS changes should be taking effect by now.
