Out of all the books I read this summer, the only new one worth writing about is Andre Dubus III's The Garden of Last Day. I loved The House of Sand and Fog, but this latest novel of his just didn't cut it. It's over five hundred pages of excruciatingly detailed writing about only two or three days of a stripper's life and the life of a fictionalized version of a September 11th Trade Center hi-jacker. Much of the time is spent describing their brief encounter (thought it feels as if it lasts a hundred years) at the Puma Club for Men on the southern, gulf coast of Florida. The rest of the book is spent on the day or two after, finally ending with the bombing of the World Trade Center and the FBI coming to question April about the few hours she spent with Basam, the hi-jacker.

There was potential for another good book, but Dubus couldn't cut it this time. There was no compelling reason to become attached to any of the characters nor were there any real glimpses inside Islamic culture as there was in House of Sand and Fog. About half of the time I spent with the book, all I could do was think about how stupid some of these characters were. So my advice is not to spend money on it. If a friend wants to get rid of it, give it a whirl since it'll be free. Otherwise, don't bother.

I just finished Under The Dome by Stephen King. If you enjoyed The Stand then you'll enjoy this one.....it's not quite as good I don't think but it's close enough for King fans.

You must go out and buy Pat Conroy's South of Broad! I read it over Christmas break and was in awe of this man's talent. There were one or two hokey moments in the dialogue that I could've done without, but his wit and dark sense of humor overpowers his few mistakes. And I've never been to Charleston, South Carolina, but now I must go.

I'm studying the feds regs on hazmat and tanker CDL endorsements to take the written tests. Gotta renew my license next month with more flexibility of use.
