I know Doubt has been out for a while now, but last night was the first chance I had to see it. It's no longer on the theater's signs--it's only listed online--and the only showing is at 10:00PM. (There's a story behind this, but I will tell that later.) All I have to say is Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman excel at everything I've ever seen them in. Streep is Sister Aloysius Beauvier, a hard-nosed nun stuck in the dark ages who slaps her students and forbids even basic modern conveniences like the ballpoint pen and secular music even as innocent as "Frost the Snowman." She suspects Father Brendan Flynn of molesting a student. Without any hard evidence, she does what she can but there is no real resolution to the whole thing. But she works with what she has to do the best for her children. The dialog is quick, intelligent, and quite believable. It seems straighforward, but there are some major twists involved. I won't say what they are. You just need to see it. Some good points are raised and it's a great cat-and-mouse chase.

Now for the story that I mentioned earlier but forgot to tell. They closed the theater on me. When I got there they told me that there was a problem with the screen showing Doubt, so I chose another movie. As soon as I got in that theater, a guy came in and told me he got everything fixed. So, I moved over to the other theater where Doubt was playing and I was the only one in there. That was quite fun, actually, as I had never seen a movie in a theater alone before. Anyway, when I left, I half-jokingly wondered if they had all left and locked me in. I took note of the location of the emergency exit just in case. It being a small town, late at night, in the middle of the week made it seem possible that they would roll up the sidewalks, forgetting that they still had a customer. Indeed, that is what they did. The normal exit to the theater was still unlocked, but the lobby was pitch black and every living soul was gone. There weren't even any cars in the parking lot. You know, it's quite eerie being in a large, normally crowded space when it's black and no one is around. Those doors, thankfully, only lock from the outside so I could get out. But, honestly, had they not packed up the popcorn, cokes, and candy, I would have figured out how to work the projectors and watched movies and eaten junk all night.

That would be awesome to be locked in there and watch movies all night. I've been the only one in the theater twice. I saw Dracula: Dead and Loving It on Christmas day and Return of the Jedi Special Edition all by my lonesome. It was so weird feeling.
