What is the best program for getting rid spyware? My brother got hit by the"xp antivirus" virus and another one that was a lot like it. Pay or free it does not matter. Try installing spybot and adaware as both are free , then update them both so they have the latest definitions and the reboot the computer and run them both in safe mode so the spyware does not load in to memory and stop the programs. Also scan your hard drive with a good virus cleaner in safe mode. That will usally get rid of most problems , if not you may need to reformat and take a loss.

As well use hijackthis, and an online spyware/virus scanner. If you still can't seem to get rid of all of it, a internet search for the specific spyware might also help as there are guides for the really pesky ones.

http://www.lancelhoff.com/2008/02/22/how-to-remove-xp-antivirus-protection/ I already have the brother checking this one out, and I am checking out "spyware doctor". Adaware only does 20 bugs at a time now I have been told. Thanks for the ideas.

When you install it choose the free edition setup as well. It should say License Status at the bottom and type should say free edition.

we quit trying after he bought a new computer. Somday I will work on it again. If he bought a new computer, then take it with the recovery cds and format it and use it rather then let it sit Unless he wants something off of it

I haven't found a truly "Magical" bullet for spyware removal. There's some nasty stuff out there that I can't get out even at the dos level. I usually run a good updated "pay" version of antivirus. NIS is my preference, I buy the new version every year. It catches most everything. For those couple of times it didn't. I reformatted and reinstalled. It's the only sure cure. I've tried Webroot products, Spybot and Adaware. None of them seem to have that magic touch to keep me totally malware free. So I recommend a good "pay" version of an anti-virus and firewall to keep a system protected. My dad taught me, and I've never had anyone prove him wrong. That, "You get what you pay for", and "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch".

http://virusscan.jotti.org/ is good for testing certain files which are suspect. Avast works quite well also, catching many problems as they download. Spybot's Tea Timer program is nice. Just have to deal with more alerts when installing or changing parts of the registry. Though what I usually do is try not to download too much, suspect or otherwise, and if I wish to do so, I load up a virtual copy of an OS and load the program in there and monitor what happens. If it is bad, I just don't save the changes to the OS image, and then don't install that in my real OS. Or if the program isn't all that demanding, leave it in the virtual copy and then don't worry about it causing problems in the future with my main OS. Extensions Noscript and Flashblock are great for firefox. PeerGuardian with the spyware list and other baddies, which is set to block http helps a lot.

Very good idea. The malware I seem to contract seems to be 0-day exploits, or "drive by" downloads. I've been known to surf the seedy side of the internet from time to time. And I love Bit Torrent, so I have my feet in the sewer sometimes.

I get drive by crap too jbone A few days back when I was searching for harolds ice cream maker manual I clicked a link and that said it was the manual an then it loaded up and started downloading crap and scanning my files. I hate those type of pages as they are mislabeled on purpose. I shut down firefox with alt F4 and ran windows washer and checked for spyware afterwards

Never played around with yet, I'll see what it is all about in the future. Plus virtual copies of windows and other operating systems are the only thing that saved me in the past when I used to browse seedy parts of the internet.
