I need to purchase a new server for work. I'm not too familiar with servers, but PC's I know. Any recommendations on where to purchase one? Dell is out because the boss hates dell. I'm looking for Xeon processors, 4 gig ram, 2 120 gig hard drives, 2 500 gig hard drives, rest doesn't matter.

Never really dealt with servers. What type of raid are you setting up? Going for speed, redundancy or a combination of the two? What will be its primary function? Also a lot depends on the operating budget.

Thanks, I've never dealt with servers either. We're getting a quote from the GeekSquad!

I'm not a Dell person but you can't beat their servers.

I bought a new server last november for my work. It was a home build by a local solutions/service business.

Got 1TB of hddrs in a hot pluggable raid 5 array. 4 quad core Zeons to run the system. 4 gigs memory. Redundant power supplies. It runs on an intel board. Its been in service about 8 months now without a hitch. Runs a couple of big databases and network traffic for about 15 client computers without a hitch. Using SBS 2003 for an OS.

The grand total, about $5,500.

I didn't personally, like I said. A small server solutions business in reno called Sygnus Solutions built the server for us. They probably bought from an OEM supplier like newegg, but I can't be sure.

Take back what I posted about the 4 each quad core xeons. Its only 2 quad core xeons. I'll look up all the hardware specs at work today.
