I finally got to see
Wanted last night it. Shoot 'em up movies usually aren't my cup of tea, but this one looked good to me simply because I love Morgan Freeman and I have grown to really like James McAvoy since
The Last King of Scotland. And I was right, it was very good.
I don't want to say a lot to give it away. All I will say is that through all the violence, there is a point to it all that really hit home with me. James McAvoy plays a very ordinary man, named Wesley, who is very timid, meak, and as Angelina Jolie's character puts it, apologizes too much. But within him is a very strong, sharp, and capable person who is screaming to be let out. He takes all kinds of abuse from his friend, his girlfriend who is cheating on him with his friend, and his boss. And when he is drawn in to the fraternity of assassins and trained to use his abilities and trained to toughen up and stand up for himself, he does something else like me. He snaps. He finally had enough and he told his girlfriend, his boss, and his friend exactly how useless they really are.
The assassins don't just go around killing people. They believe that through an ancient code, fate tells them who must be killed. Morgan Freeman plays the old and wise leader, Sloan, who interprets the codes and the assassins follow those orders. Wesley has been picked because fate has dictated to Sloan that a former fraternity member, Cross, be be assassinated. And Sloan has picked Wesley to do it because the last person Cross killed was Wesley's own father, whom he thought ran out on his mother shortly after he was born.
Wesley goes on his mission to kill Cross and learns as Cross is dying that everything he has been told is not true and that he has only been manipulated. Using his training and his newfound courage and ability to stand up for what is right, he sets out to pay back the people that have lied to him and caused so much damage to so many lives.
The makers of this movie broke many of the laws of physics with a lot of the stunts that the characters do, like curving bullets. And the special effects were marvelous. It seemed very Matrix-like to me.
In short, go see
Wanted. There are plenty of shootout scenes and chase scenes, and the plot, along with the special effects were very much engaging. You may just leave the theater assessing your own character and your own life.
