First , head on over to http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/download.html and download Electron Microscope. The full version is usally called EMIII.zip

Once you download EMIII.zip, use winzip or any other zip program to extract everything in the zipped file to C:\EMIII

After that is done , browse to C:\EMIII and double click on the file called "speed.exe" - Doing this will create a file called "speed.emd" that electron microscope reads to show your your computers speed. All it is is a text file with the .emd extension.

Next download the newest no-nonsense client at http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html and after you download it, put the file in the C:\EMIII directory along with the other files.


Open up the C:\EMIII directory and change the name of the no-nonsense client from its current name to FAH500-Console.exe - This needs to be done for electron microscope to autofind the program.

Now, double click FAH500-Console.exe and enter the following when it asks.

* User name - [a user name you want your points to go to]
* Team number [40203]
* Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service [no]
* Ask before fetching/sending [no] - no if you have an always on connection, yes if your on dial up.
* Use internet explorer settings yes/no yes if you have a proxy, else no
* Use Proxy yes/no yes if you have a proxy, else no
* Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB in size (such work units may have large memory demands) yes/no (if you use the machine for things other than F@H and have less than 256MB RAM no, else yes because these units get far better points)
* Change advanced options [yes]
* Core Priority [low]
* CPU Usage [100]
* Disable highly optimized assembly code [no]
* Pause if battery power is being used (useful for laptops) [no] if your not on a laptop
* Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints (3-30) [5]
* Memory, in MB , to indicate <# available> I subtracted 10 megs from this number and used it. In example I had 510 mb and typed in only use 500 mb so I would have some ram left over.
* Request work units without deadlines [no]
* Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced scientific cores and/or work units if available <no/yes> I selected yes on this but if you use the elctron microscope above , you can choose no and add -advmethods in to a box at the bottom to do the same thing if you want to see what is best for you.
* Ignore any deadline information (mainly useful if system clock has errors) [no]
* Machine ID (1-8) [1]


After all that is done let the client download a packet and the core needed to crunch said packet and shut down the client when it is done downloading everything. You did let it through your firewall I hope.

Next, go to C:\EMIII and click EMIII.exe and you will get a set up screen like the one shown in this message -

All the info in the picture above is from my version of electron microscope. When you first run it, there will be nothing there.

In the CPU Info box leave it blank as it will read your computers speed from the speed.emd file we created in the first step when we clicked speed.exe

In the Box Name, type in a name for your box, in example Supercomputer 1 , etc

In Box path , click the icon with the magnifying glass next to it and the program will search your hard drive for FAH500-Console.exe <Remember we renamed it in the first step?> that is why

Before we click save and exit we need to click the -> up top where it says "Press these arrows for more options --->" to get to the screen shown in this screenshot.

On that second screen, I suggest if this is the first time you set up the program to check the box marked "Start EMIII when windows starts [adds shortcut to startup folder]" - you only need to do this once and after it is done the box unchecks itself as you can see.

When done checking the boxes listed above in the 2nd screenshot, as well as checking the "Start EMIII when windows starts [adds shortcut to startup folder]" box , use the arrows to return to the first screen shown and click save and exit.

You will then see electron microscope show up like this

That is all there is to it. If all went well, the program should boot up each time you start or reboot your computer.

Now to explain what most of that means

The bar graph labeled Frame shows I am 22% done on the current frame.

The Bar graph labeled Frames show I have 86 of 100 frames done.

Time per frame is how much time it is taking to finish 1 frame - here it is 20 minutes and 29 seconds. - To the right of the 00:20:29 is 00:16:00 which shows how much time is left before the current frame is finished.

Time per work unit is how long it will take to finish the entire work unit. In my case - 34 hours 8 minutes and 2 seconds.

Time remaining shows I have 4 hours 42 minutes and 17 seconds before this packet is done.

Start - shows when I got the packet I am working on
finish - shows the projected time when I should be done with this packet

see the white computer with the number 450 under it? The computer will change color based on the condition of the core your running - you can put your mouse pointer over the computer symbol and it will tell you if the core is good or not.

The 450 tells you that the work unit is worth 450 points This will change based on what your working on. Beware that some packets like the 450 pointers only show up information on electron microscope after it crunches a few frames of the work unit, so if you dont see any information right away, just leave it alone for a bit and check on it later.

Also the 450 pointers use alot of processor power on the first 10 frames or so and you may experiance some sluggishness while the program is working on those early frames.

One more thing, if you shut the program down and restart it, it will look like it is folding incredibly fast and then seem like it stops at 100% and will make a beeping sound.

If it does this, just let it run and it will catch up and fix the problem if you let it alone. Don't keep shutting it down and restarting it as you may lose your work and it will slow you down in the long run.

Basically if it beeps, after being shut down and restarted, it will usally try to start the frame over again but wont show up on electron microscope until the frame is completed correctly.

Great write up Trally! I might consider trying the no nonsense client if I ever have to reinstall.

you don't even need to reinstall. Just put the client in the same folder with your current WinFah.exe and it'll run off of your existing work folder. So you don't even lose your place.

Hehe thanks. Yeah it's pretty cool, folding. I like that they gave it a team feel to the whole thing. Like they say on their site, the spirit of competition helps make people want to do it more.

Electron Microscope was updated today and users should see that when viewing their copy of the program

Electron microscope was updated today or a few days ago

It looks like Electron Microscope is no more as the website that it was on is now blank so I am currently using a program called FahMon 2.2.0 that can be downloaded at http://fahmon.silent-blade.org/index.php?n=Main.Help

Basically you download the program, unzip it to a directory of your choosing. Run it, and choose download current projects so it knows how many points you get for what your folding.

Then you click ok to run the client. Right click the the empty part of the list to add a client and tell it where your client is located and add a name for the client and then I would suggest you add a start up for both programs to your start up programs.

That way your client starts up as well as the FahMon program starts at boot up
