Quakes in Reno

I'm not going to search the forums to find where this has been mentioned. Cause it just really freaked me out, right now at the time of this post. We just got a good shake in reno. My first earthquake. One of the strangest feelings I've ever had. That was creepy. I must have slept through one before that I don't know about, but, if I was asleep it didn't count. I'm not asleep now, and that made the walls ripple. Spooky. Maybe I'm getting out of Reno just in time. It would be a trip if the mother of all earthquakes took reno down. All the small activity in the article has added up to this? Or, does it get worse? Can't say, but you'll hear about this one on the news tomorrow. According to the news: News of quakes the last 24 hrs"Scientists are telling residents in Reno to prepare for something bigger after more than 150 tiny earthquakes rippled the ground beneath the city's western suburbs Thursday and Friday. The quakes occurred on small unnamed faults that appear to be rupturing at unusually shallow depths, and researchers at the University of Nevada's seismological laboratory are calling them aftershocks from two temblors that struck Thursday in the densely populated west Reno subdivisions called Mogul and Somerset. Thursday's quakes registered magnitudes slightly greater than 4. Even though the aftershocks have been small - almost all with magnitudes of less than 2 - many have been felt as gentle shaking in the area, and the two on Thursday were felt as single sharp jolts as far west as Truckee, 30 miles away. "Nevada's been really quiet for months until a small series began about three weeks ago, and now there have been dozens in the last few days," John Anderson, director of the seismological lab in Reno, said Friday. "Our earthquake hazards are fairly significant, and although we're certainly not predicting anything major, we want people in the area to take the kind of precautions you folks in the Bay Area know about - keeping earthquake readiness kits handy with food, water and other supplies. It just makes sense." Aftershocks can be expected for several more days based on the magnitudes of Thursday's earthquakes, said Anderson, who added that the persistence of this particular earthquake sequence slightly increases the probability for a significant earthquake in west Reno. "However, the occurrence of additional earthquake activity in the area cannot be predicted or forecast," he said.

Don't worry Amy, our cat is going with us in the cabin, we made an $80 reservation for her. She'll ride in a little ventilated soft pet carrier. You can check your pets in as baggage, but we decided against it. Update: USGS: 4.7 earthquake shakes Reno, Nev. "USGS: 4.7 earthquake shakes Reno, Nev. 11 minutes ago RENO, Nev. (AP) — Another earthquake in the Reno area has knocked pictures off walls and rocks off hillsides. The temblor came late Friday night, a day after a quake caused high-rise casinos to sway and put visitors and residents on edge. There were no immediate reports early Saturday of injuries or major damage. The U.S. Geological Survey says the 4.7 magnitude temblor at 11:40 p.m. was centered six miles west of Reno near Mogul. That's where a swarm of more than 100 quakes rattled the area on Thursday. The biggest was a 4.2 event.... I'm from Texas, I've lived through tornadoes, I've lived in Florida, through hurricanes. But the "earth shake" thing is just spooky to me.

Not sure what set them off, this article says they started about 3 weeks ago. We've been hearing on the news about little shakes here and there. The last few days they've gotten worse. If they'll hold off the big one till after Monday, I'll be gone. Swarm of quakes in Reno may presage bigger one..."Scientists are telling residents in Reno to prepare for something bigger after more than 150 tiny earthquakes rippled the ground beneath the city's western suburbs Thursday and Friday.
