Early news is that Barak Obama is leading in Iowa. Anyone else see or hear anything?

I doubt it as I think all politicians are crooks since they change as soon as they get in office or when they get money from big companies \:p

Maybe the next one won't, and we can treat it like a horserace, not a people vote race.

I would not mind politics if they would not try to make news laws and impose all sorts of restrictions on people and rely more on common sense then \:\)

On Jan 26th 2008: South Carolina

On Jan 29th 2008: Florida

On Feb 1st 2008: Maine

On Feb 5th 2008: North Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Connecticut, Delaware, Missouri, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, American Samoa, New York, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Tennessee, Utah, Illinois, Kansas, Idaho, Georgia, Alabama, Alaska, and Arizona.

I notice Barack actually adds people on twitter while Hillary does not. Maybe that is why he has a fan base 10x of what Hillary has \:p

Wonders if they will still use this after the election \:p

I heard on the radio earlier that Hillary didn't have all of the state by state local campaign offices set up and running the way that Obama does. That there were no locals helping in the campaign the way that there should have been.

McCain might have screwed up too with the new money rules on campaign spending. Something about him borrowing against Government matching funds and then hitting the spending limit.

I voted for Hilary in the primary. She and Barack seem almost identical as far as policy goes, so I voted based on experience. Since she was her husband's co-president, I think she knows the job well enough. ;\)

In the end, I'll vote for the democratic nominee, and that appears to be Obama.

All three of the candidates scare the heck out of me for different reasons.

McCain - The worst thing that scares me about him is him saying he'd stay in Iraq for 100 years if needed. But I'm also worried that he will die in office if elected. He's 72 now and doesn't look like the picture of health.

Obama - There are too many rednecks in the country and if he's elected, some idiot will at least try to kill him. It might even be a women if Hillary is Vice President.

Hillary - I trust her judgement more than any other candidate, but if she picks Obama as a Vice President, a lot of blacks might want to shoot her to make Obama the first black president in history.

I'm predicting none of them will make it to the second term. I hope I'm wrong. I lived through Kennedy's assasination and it was totally depressing. The nation went through a long period of mourning and upheaval.

Obama is not the next messiah, but it kills me to see my wife sitting over there suffering everyday when stem cell research could help if it was allowed. McCain will see to it that it continues to be not allowed. And she can't handle riding in the truck for much more than a half hour so going all the way to where it is allowed isn't happening either. Besides, who has the money for that? So I cannot vote that way.

I may be unique here in my reasoning. But that's my penny or two.

Well our suspended overtime is being unsuspended due to a scheduled Obama riot I mean gathering on Tuesday. I'm expecting the natives to get restless regardless if he wins or loses and this opinion is based on the fact that they rioted when the Bulls won. They will also riot if he doesn't win.

Yep, I hate that crap when the news pumps up the michigan/ohio state fans as well then wonder why the people tear down the goal posts when just a week before they were on air pushing the limits by drawing stuff on the sidewalks and walking in to diners and starting crap.

This op-ed piece in The New York Times articulates what has gone wrong with the Republican party far better than I ever could. It's a good read, so I will post a copy of it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/03/opinion/03cohen.html?em
"Republican Blues

By ROGER COHEN
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

Fazal Fazlin has an American story. Raised in Karachi, Pakistan, he came to the United States in 1969 with an engineering degree and little else. Now he lives on a five-acre estate in the waterfront mansion that once belonged to Nelson Poynter, luminary of the newspaper business.

Poynter, who died in 1978, was the owner of The St. Petersburg Times, a bastion of journalistic excellence and liberal tradition.

Liberalism was never Fazlin’s thing. For most of his rags-to-riches American life, he was a Nixon Republican.

“I felt Nixon was a great President,” Fazlin, a dapper 58, told me. “He opened relations with China, and that’s what kept inflation down. He had a really good command of the world.”

So perhaps it’s surprising to see “Obama for President” signs outside the Poynter-Fazlin mansion and learn that Fazlin, joining long lines of early-voting Florida residents, has already cast his ballot for the Democratic candidate after twice voting for Bush.

But I’m not surprised. Lifelong Republicans turning to Obama has been one of the themes I’ve picked up in this campaign, ever since, back in January, I ran into Bryant Jones, an Idaho-raised Republican who’d volunteered for Obama in South Carolina.

For Jones, it was disenchantment with “my-way-or-the-highway politics and the same old faces.” For Fazlin, the Republican Party has “forgotten itself.”

That phrase resonated. This election has also been about the ideological exhaustion of a party. What was John McCain’s vice-presidential pick but a Hail Sarah pass reflecting the desperation of a Republican trying to succeed Bush?

Fazlin’s Republican Party, he told me over lunch, “was for less government and it was fiscally conservative. But look at the spending under Bush. We are trillions in debt. My granddaughter will pay for that.”

His Republican Party believed in a link between hard work and reward rather than between securitized toxic mortgage loans and instant fortunes. His Republican Party believed in transactions based on reality. “I had to jump through hoops for my first mortgage,” Fazlin said.

The party’s cultural shift also troubles him. In the party he joined, the Christian Right was insignificant. He sees a link between its rise and “an attitude toward Muslims that I really don’t like. Muslim cannot mean terrorist, but some of the emails I get suggest Republicans don’t see the difference.”

A Muslim himself, Fazlin was pleased to hear another Republican-to-Obama convert, Gen. Colin Powell, say: “Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim-American kid believing he or she could be president?”

American openness allowed Fazlin to make his way. He worked for Zenith in Chicago, then Control Data in Minneapolis, where he came up with “a process to change the surface energy of Teflon.”

I associate Teflon with easy-to-flip eggs, but apparently I missed something, which is probably why I’m a hack and he’s rich.

Fazlin’s breakthrough was important for circuit boards of high-speed computers. He moved on to plasma technology, founding Advanced Plasma in St. Petersburg in 1980.

Nineteen years later, he sold the company “for a few bucks,” enough to buy the Poynter estate. It was here that his far-flung family (from Pakistan, Canada and Australia) gathered for his birthday in June — and gave him the decisive prod into the Obama camp.

They asked: What’s happened to America? Why is it so heavy-handed? Why won’t it sit down, eyeball to eyeball, with its enemies and try to work things out? Fazlin considered those good questions.

He switched allegiance, helping to organize a fundraiser for Obama in Orlando. There, he met Obama and liked “the way he looked me in the eye, the way he wasn’t on a pedestal, but one of us.” He also liked Obama’s efficiency (and believes it could save the government money). They talked politics and Pakistani cuisine.

The Fazlin conversion is significant. Among Republicans flipping to Obama I’ve detected three core feelings: we have to do something different; we cannot be the party of fiscal irresponsibility; we cannot be the angry party of an “America-first” jingoism that alienates the world.

There’s something more, something unspoken. Reagan’s line was, “It’s morning again in America.” Bush has been about American dusk. Republicans are hard-headed but not to the point they want hope banished from the national vocabulary.

Enter Obama.

In Miami, I found more of the Fazlin phenomenon. Andy Gomez, an assistant professor at the University of Miami and a Cuban-American, told me his immediate family is made up of five registered Republicans and one Democrat.

Of that heavily Republican band, five, including Gomez himself, are voting Obama.

“Cuba’s not the issue,” he said. “It’s education, health care, the economy.”

Florida’s still a toss-up, but there’s Obama movement.

As Fazlin swept his Mercedes up the drive, I suggested the colonnaded mansion with its cascading bougainvillea was a Spanish colonial.

“What? I just think of it as Fazal style,” he said.

This is a great country. Hispano-Pakistani is fine. The past is prelude. Only the future counts. It looms tomorrow."

I voted this morning at around 10:30am. It wasn't very crowded inside, but it was hellish to find a place to park. So I have now done my civic duty and have not let the Suffragettes down.

Damn, all these years I could have been getting paid; how did I miss this little trick.

No, I've never heard of it in modern times. Back in the day the political machines had ways of making you vote, yes some people got paid, some got jobs, some were intimidated. It wasn't that you were paid to vote, it was you were paid (in various ways) to vote for a certain party. We used to have a political machine second only to the Chicago and NYC machines, but it has since faded away. Can't give away jobs anymore, now you have to take a test and be on the list. Now with open govenment, everyone will know if there is monkey business going on - noone can keep a secret anymore.

But, really why wasn't I around for this good stuff, LOL.

I can say that I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this. There were actually crowds of people running down the street shouting and cheering when the news networks projected that Obama would be the next president. It makes me feel so much better to know that people still care, especially the young people who will mature to be the leaders of the future.

Even though I disagree with McCain's policies, I do think he is a man of character and integrity. And after watching his speech, I couldn't help feeling a bit sorry for him. Now it's Obama's turn, and I do hope that he can actually do what he says he can do for our country.

Obama is the future -looking at the people at McCain's speech all white, a mixture at Grant park. That is what we want. McCain's speech was very good-he is just like me older-we need new young people. Like Kennedy was.

It'll be okay. He can't be any worse than what we have now. BTW I didn't vote for Bush either time.

I guess I voted for a Democrat. I voted for Pat Rodgers for judge not knowing his party. He won and he's a Democrat.

Looks like you will be getting a new Sen. What you think about Andrew Como? I have heard him and a few others in the lineup.

I heard that Andrew does not want it. He has two small daughters and they are pretty settled in. Their mother, Kerry Kennedy, had an affair while they were living in NYC and left the family. He's taken on the primary raising of the girls; and he's a very busy Attorney General. He's doing a great job. But, I think he would make a great Senator.

Our other contenders don't seem as qualified, but maybe the Governor will pick someone from the West, from Buffalo or another woman, there are many to choose from.

Obama promised to pay this bill before his party. He's now stiffing the Chicago taxpayers. What a man to be proud of.

So the Obama Administration isn't starting out very well.

Richardson Said to Withdraw as Commerce Secretary Nominee

Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico has withdrawn his name as
the commerce secretary nominee because of an investigation

Whether we agree with our presidents or not we need to pray for them and to pray that they make wise and good decisions. And we also need to realise that there is no president or government official or government mandate that will actually change our lives. If you want a positive change in your life you are the only one who can do it. No change in presidency has EVER resulted in someone's life being changed for the best or the worst.

So lets just sit back and see what happens.

I saw quite a change with certain presidents in power wesley so I have to disagree with you on this one. I remember talking about some of them taking away our rights and privacy all for our protection until it was too late frown

That was the theme of yesterday's Inaugural speech, so you are already in the frame of mind that our new President wants us all to be in....good job.
