anyone else having problems with sound in iTunes 7?

I had iTunes 6.4 on my machine before and I could play music from the iTunes store without a problem, but now, I just upgraded to iTunes 7, and I can't even browse the iTunes store. I browse and click on a song to listen to a 30 second clip of, and the song freezes, and plays a loud single note thru my 5.1 speakers. like if the songs hang. It isn't just a single song either, its the whole store it seems like.

any ideas on this one?

I'm using XP with a SB Audigy Gamer, if that makes any difference at all LOL Sound works fine everywhere else, even tried setting the sound blaster card back to factory defaults, still same problem, tried rebooting still same problem.

could this be an iTunes 7 specific issue? its not with the iTunes store, because I can't play songs on my local hard drive thru iTunes no more either now

how do I downgrade back to 6.4 this sucks

I had trouble with Itunes. Check your sound settings first before getting rid of Itunes 7 bubazoo.

First click your speaker icon by your clock to open up playback control, then click "Options" and "Properties" and make sure your sound card is set for both playback and recording. Once done, click ok and close out of everything.

Now open up quicktime "Quicktime Player", click "Edit" , "Preferences", "Quicktime Preferences" ,"Audio" Tab, "Select audio playback and recording devices." And on the box that pops up, make sure on the Audio/voice tabs that your sound card is set as the default in each of those boxes and click ok.

If the "Safe mode" box is checked where you see the "Select audio playback and recording devices." is you may want to uncheck it so your audio is not being generated via software instead of hardware.

That should fix your problem.

yeah well, that doesn't help me fix the problem Spray,

it just shows that 50,000+ people are having the same problem.

I would downgrade back to 6.4, but I no longer have the 6.4 install file, I overwrote my 6.4 install for the version 7 install

if I could find it, I would just reinstall windows XP and do that to fix the problem temporarily.

unfortunately, if I do that, I would loose another authorization to play my songs, I have already used up 2 and I only got 5 total, which is a real pain in the butt I tell yah. I'm really beginning to HATE iTunes with a passion.

By the way, if you have an ipod , you need version 7 to update the ipods os since they now embedded the ipod updater program with itunes instead of making the updater seperate.

I had a heck of a time when I updated but it was do to turning off some needed services on the black viper list that messed up the ipod updater and kept it from loading.

Also Itunes 7 wont work with IpodderX for windows now when it is supposed to. IpodderX no longer adds the videos it downloads to Itunes for some reason but is ok with mp3s so I am now using feedemon

See if my suggestion helps out as the problem you describe is common when your sound card is set to direct x hardware instead of the actual name of the sound card your using.

Shouldnt hurt to try as I have it happen to me all the time when I install the replay radio drivers that change my sound settings all over and usally the above trick fixes the problem.

it didn't, still same problem..

It seems to be an iTunes 7 specific problem. 6.4 worked just fine. so I may want to go ahead and downgrade if I can figure out how to.

After you made the changes did you close down itunes completely and restart it to see if the changes worked ?

You could try the following if shutting down itunes after changing stuff did now work.

> Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panels ->
> Quicktime
> Click on Audio tab.
> Set Size popup to 24 bits.
> Click OK.
>
> Does that help?

After doing the above, shut down itunes and restart it.

I even tried restarting my computer, still same problem.

Quicktime is having similar problems, so I don't know what the deal is

actually, it did.. it was set to
Rate 44.1 khz
Size 16bit
Channels: Stereo (L,R)

so I set the size to 24 instead of 16, and now it plays the music (horray) but its all distorid now

so I then tried changing the channel to 5.1 surround, and that didn't work either, so I'm not sure what to do now

I am using a SB Audigy Gamer (just the original Audigy 1)
with Creative 5.1 surround sound speakers.

I just did the following to fix my problem. First I uninstalled quicktime and Itunes.

Rebooted. Then I shut down everything that was on after I rebooted which included my dsl modem.

Then I re-installed Itunes in the C:\Itunes directory. Opened up Itunes and clicked edit/preferences/advanced tab/Importing tab , then changed on CD Insert - changed it to Show CD and checked the box titled use error coreection when reading audio cds and clicked ok.

After that I closed and reopened Itunes and everything seems ok. I did have to change the 24 back to 16 in quicktime player after that.

Open up quicktime player/edit/preferences/quicktime preferences - Click the Audio tab and change 24 to 16 if the size is set to 24.

Try changing the 24 back to 16 and see if that helps. Also try Opening up Itunes and clicked edit/preferences/advanced tab/Importing tab , then changed on CD Insert - changed it to Show CD and checked the box titled use error coreection when reading audio cds and clicked ok.

Do the above before trying to reinstall the program in a new directory and see if that works.

Check to see if windows media player does the same thing as itunes is doing when you play mp3s. That way if it does then its more then likely a sound card issue and you could try uninstalling your sound drivers and reinstalling them.

Also try changing from 24 to 8 instead of 16 and see if that works.

8 or 16 don't work, only 24 does, and its very distorted.

winamp plays all my music just fine (just checked all are playing at 44 khz 128 bit shrugs)

weird eh?

there all in iTunes mp4 proprietary file format, so I can't test them out in WMP. there purchased iTunes songs, but nothing will play in iTunes not even standard mp3's

Use windows media player to play a test mp3 and see if that playes.

Some folks say the hissing disappears after you raise your itunes volume level on the itunes program all the way to the right to the max settings.

See if this article helps you out Bubazoo.
