I'm taking the day off of work tomorrow so I can go to Nashville and see this movie. It pisses me off that this is only a limited release movie and Nashville is the only place in TN playing it. AND it's only at one theater. It officially opened last week but it's not even here yet, until tomorrow.

Since this past week has been voluntary at work because we're having shut down, there is no hit to your attendance for being late or missing a day. So I'm calling out since I've gotten all my work done and all I would have left to do is clean. So it's Nashville bound to check out A Scanner Darkly.

The cool thing is that, while looking for the one and only Nashville theater that's playing this movie, I found another theater that's playing my favorite horror movie of all time. Evil Dead 2. I've never seen this in a theater before. I may make a detour to check this one out too.

Yeah, I've seen that trailer. That's what got me to try to find the book. Then I found out who wrote it and found a book called Counter-Clock World that he wrote that I had been trying to track down for about 13 years. Right now I am currently going through all of his books and short stories.

The thing about Scanner is that it was written in 1979 and he predicted Caller-ID, Wi-Fi, government spying, RFID in credit cards (which is an idea being thrown about where the store will not let you in if you don't have a credit card on you), government created drug problems and the fake war on it, etc.

While reading it I had to remind myself over and over that this was written before all of this stuff. The one part with the caller-ID being mentioned it was described as a data-stream that was sent through the phone that gave the agent the callers full name and where the call originated from. I was saying, "Why didn't he just say caller-id?" Then I remembered, it wasn't around when he wrote it.

For those that want to check out the first 24 minutes of a scanner darkly you can go to http://media.filmforce.ign.com/media/670/670907/vids_1.html and you need to verify your age to see it since it has adult material in it.

I just came back from seeing it and I really liked it. It got some bad reviews but it was very faithful to the book and the dialogue was actually funnier on screen than in the book. Seeing it made a little more sense as well. Even though the ending is the same as the book it was more clear as to what was going on than the book.

But the animation was very well done. I anylised the scenes more than I paid attention to the film. I would love to have that Rotoshop program they created. Their site says that they may make it retail some day.

But if it's playing in your city or nearby I suggest checking it out. Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harrilson and Rory Cochran were very funny in their dialogue.

I am glad to see that they included the hillarious scene where Robert Downey Jr's character buys an 18 speed bike for $50 and Woody Harrilson points out that it only has 9 gears; 6 in the back and 3 in the front.

After watching this movie in high def I realised one interesting thing. In the scene when Arctor calls Donna and their call is being monitored the security agent that is listen to the call has a computer monitor displaying many windows of information. One of those windows is text of a conversation. I paused it and zoomed in and realised that it was actually text from the screenplay for Blade Runner. It was either the screenplay for the movie or it was the original book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

And interesting find!
