Source - http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/21/leisure.startrek.reut/index.htmlReport: 'Star Trek' set for '08 revival Variety: J.J. Abrams to take the helm Friday, April 21, 2006; Posted: 8:32 a.m. EDT (12:32 GMT) LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition. The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said. The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce. Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission. The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series. The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

Did Kirk and Spock even meet at the Academy, and have their "first outer-space adventure" together? Is Paramount re-writing the Trek canon yet more?

MK: I think it depends on what they mean about their "first outer space adventure" - it could mean right after Captain Pike was incapacitated and Kirk took over, before TOS takes place. And I think by the wording, that's what it means (because there's nothing to absolutely determine that their first mission happens right after the Acadamy). Maybe. I dunno. As for them meeting at the Acadamy, I dunno if it's ever been mentioned? From a couple TOS novels I've read, I don't think so, but the novels aren't canon either. So... Either way... STAR TREK XI!!!! YAY!!!!

Shatner has learned the Hollywood game all to well , and will even make fun of himself , he Whores himself out for a buck and loves doing it . Others never learned the trick ( not saying just the Start Trek cast ) , and were type cast , he figured it all out and has profited from it . A new cast and a new start wouldnt bother me , I was never a real ST fan to begin with , Now BATMAN , thats a different story

Looks like there is a possibility that there is really nothing to this new ST movie story. From www.TVSQUAD.COM , Quote:
Abrams clears up Star Trek rumors
Posted Apr 25th 2006 7:00PM by Bob Sassone
Everyone was excited the other day when Variety reported that Lost/Alias creator and Mission: Impossible 3 director J.J. Abrams was going to direct the next Star Trek flick in 2008, making a prequel to the original Kirk/Spock show. But it wasn't exactly as the paper reported ...or was it? Empire has a quick interview with Abrams:
"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation. People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumors of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
But here's where the confusion starts. The headline of this article is "It Won't Be Kirk and Spock." But then the article goes on to say that Abrams is a fan of the original series, he thinks the characters are "spectacular," that the characters "could live again," and that he isn't releasing any details of the plot. So why is the article titled and slanted like that? There's really nothing here that contradicts the news from the other day, except that Abrams hasn't officially signed on as director yet.
So that sounds like a perfectly clear confirmation/denial to me.

Maybe it'll take place in the time frame of the original series but with different crew. And maybe they will run into Kirk or Spock during the movie. Maybe it'll be like it was in DS9 when they went back in time to the Tribbles episode and were trying not to really interact with Kirk and the rest of their crew. I really didn't like DS9 but that was a great episode. They did an amazing job of cutting in the characters from the old episode and mixed them into the new one.

This was just emailed to me from startrek.com:
If you happen to live in the Delta Quadrant, you may not have heard the news yet ... There's a new Star Trek movie in the pipeline! J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount blockbuster "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and possibly direct the next Star Trek feature, according to sources at Paramount Pictures. There is no title as yet for the new movie, but it will be the eleventh in the franchise. The project, now listed as under development, has a 2008 release date scheduled. Abrams is slated to write the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned upcoming Paramount blockbuster "M:i:III."

Ok, to muddy the waters still furthur, this from EmpireOnline HERE : Quote:
Fans around the world whooped for joy last week at news that the Star Trek franchise was being resuscitated with M:I:3 director JJ Abrams at the helm. News that it would adopt the long-mooted concept of Kirk and Spock's youthful adventures at Starfleet Academy provoked a more mixed reaction. Those who thought such a move sacrilege can rest easy though because, as Empire discovered in an interview today with Abrams himself, the story is nothing of the sort.
"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," says the director with a hint of regret. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
But the million dollar question is, what will it be about? Unsurprisingly, Abrams isn't saying ("We've made a pact not to discuss any specifics") but the Lost creator is a confirmed Original Series fan so don't be surprised if his take on the series does indeed take place around the era of Kirk and co, or if some of the established characters do make a reappearance. "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that… you know, they could live again."
So, you tell me....is it happening or not? I don't know.
