I'm finding most the books that are selling for around $20 online at the Library on CD. Is there any reason to not get them from the library?

If you want to invest some money, you can make your own audible books Just go to http://www.nextup.com/ and purchase talk aloud and I love the NeoSpeech voices

The best way to create a book is to divide it in to chapters and create the audible book that way

The pre-Mac OS X voices were scary. I believe they called one of them Fred.

If you want a sample of the voices I use - the neospeech voices - go to http://vhost.oddcast.com/vhost_minisite/demos/tts/tts_example.html and type something in and choose the kate or paul voices and see what the difference is between the ones that come with microsoft

Mind you I bought the neospeech voices from zabaware along with ultra hal but they are worth it compared to the ones that come with the computer by default. They take up like 300 megs of space and are pretty realistic when used properly

That oddcast demo only works 3 times then you need Clear the "oddjack" cookie after three entries to do more. Found on digg

I don't like machines that talk to me, nor do I like "speaking" to them. It's just not natural.

Hey Amy,
A while back Adam Curry mentioned a site for free audible books that were from the public domain and read by real people You may want to check them out at http://librivox.org/librivox-catalogue/

They also link to a ton of audio stuff that would make good listening to as well like the mercury theatre at http://www.mercurytheatre.info/ and a ton of literary podcasts as well

It is a great untapped resource for audible books and great audible stories as well.

Score!!!! I went to my library, which happens to be one of the worst in the system, and found John Adams by David McCullogh.

Right now I'm listening to "The Know it All" by A J Jacobs. Its funny as all heck. I downloaded that from audible.com

The cds from the library work but for some reason they don't go into the audiobook portion of the ipod so I have to remember where I left off.

Thanks for the link I'm checking it out now.

Only bought audiobooks end up in the premade audiobook list If you want, you can create a playlist called *Audiobook and copy your cd audiobook rips to that and it should do the same thing

Try ripping the cds in aac format as opposed to mp3 format as I think aac format is book markable.

Playlists are just lists containing your mp3s - they do not keep your place in the book that i know of.

I doubt that will work. Audible books are in their own format, IIRC. They're not encoded in MP3.

I think I have it sort of figured out. Put the audio book cd in. When the cd is in the tracks will be listed. right click on each as you go down and select get info and on the info tab use the drop down to pick audio book. If anyone comes up with a faster way let me know asap please.

What I suggested only put the file in the audio book area. In order to make your book markable for free you have to click on the file then get info. then options then check the boxes remember playback position and skip when shuffling.

Are you encoding that in AAC or MP3? I did not know one could mark points for playback in MP3 format.

I just looked, and it can be done with MP3 files, too. I've learned something new, today.

I don't actually use iTunes to encode audio. I read, somewhere, that the encoding engine wasn't very good. I use LAME, instead (MP3 at 320kpbs).

There is no LAME plug-in for Windows' iTunes.

For sound conversion I love and use a program I registered called dBpower AMP Music Converter

It's only for windows users at the moment but I use it alot to convert windows media files and real player files to mp3 format so I can listen to them on my ipod. It uses plug ins so you only install the base program and the plugins you need.

It used to be free but they had to charge folks to use the mp3 encoder due to licensing restrictions. Well worth the one time payment of $14 especially if your an audio nut

By the way, the 14 bucks is only for the mp3 encoder, so if you encode the files in AAC for an ipod you probably could get away with using it for free. They used to have it as freeware until the makers of mp3 wanted them to pay for using the encoder.

I just got an Audible.com account. I got New Moon by Stephenie Meyer (I read the first book, Twilight, and loved it). I also downloaded Roger Maris: Still a Legend by Harvey Rosenfeld, even though I am most decidedly NOT a baseball fan.
