Go Red For Women...on National Wear Red Day!

Go Red For Women is a nationwide movement celebrating the energy, passion and power we have to band together and wipe out heart disease. Too few people realize that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women - and of men - but the good news is that heart disease can largely be prevented. Spreading the Go Red For Women message empowers women to love - and save - their hearts through lifestyle choices and actions.

National Wear Red Day is Friday, February 3, 2006. On this day, millions of Americans will be wearing red to show their support for women and the fight against heart disease. By wearing red on National Wear Red Day, you can help the American Heart Association raise awareness of heart disease and inspire women to take charge of their heart health.

National Wear Red Day has its own dress code. On this day, you're free to Go Red in your own fashion. Wear your favorite red clothes or accessory - a red blouse, red lipstick, a red dress lapel pin (the symbol of women's heart health) - carry a fabulous red handbag or sport a red tie and red socks...and show some heart for heart disease prevention.

Join the millions of Americans wearing red on Friday, February 3rd and encourage others to do the same. Get involved. Go Red For Women. It's a simple, powerful way to improve women's heart health. For more information, visit www.goredforwomen.org or call the American Heart Association at 1-888-MY-HEART (1-888-694-3278).

When you put Go Red together it looks like Gored...like being goared by the horns of a bull. So yeah, most of us men eventually get goredbywomen or goredforwomen. Either way us men already contribute by default.

National Blood Donor Month Kicks off New Year
Every day in the U.S. approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities to treat patients with cancer and other diseases, to support organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident and trauma victims. Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. January, in particular, is a difficult month for blood centers to collect blood donations. A reduction in turnout can put our nation’s blood inventory at a critical low.

National Blood Donor Month, held every January, was created to help raise awareness about the importance of and need for blood donation. AABB’s goal is to help ensure that blood is available to patients whenever and wherever it is needed.

Celebrate National Blood Donor Month with AABB by donating blood and encouraging others to do so as well. Click here to learn about eligibility requirements and locate a site where you can make a contribution. By donating one pint of blood, you can help save up to three lives.

I haven't tried because I know they don't want blood that still has a virus in it. If I didn't have it I'd donate...my blood is rare apparently.

Hey did anyone hear the story about the skunk that hitched a ride in a semi loaded with pipe. It went from Torrance Cal. to Ontario Can. Now the Canadians are saying that the skunk is in Can. ileagally and there is a lot of red tape to relase her so she can go home. People are already offering to drive her back once the red tape is cleared. And we thought our Gov. had problems.

Everyone (men too!) can support the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red on Friday, February 2, 2007 -- National Wear Red Day.

It's a simple, powerful way to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke. By joining together with thousands of women, companies and organizations, and cities across America, you'll help the American Heart Association support ongoing research and education about women and heart disease.
National Wear Red Day has its own dress code. Wear your favorite red clothes or accessory -- a red blouse, a red dress pin, a fabulous red handbag or pair of shoes -- put on red lipstick, or sport a red tie or red socks.

Show your support for women and the fight against heart disease. Go Red in your own fashion and get others to participate! For more information on how to get your company, favorite local organization, or place of worship involved, please call us at 1-877-RED DAY 7 (1-877-733-3297).

Fifteen Days of Celebration

The Year of the Pig officially begins on 18 February 2007 followed by 15 days of traditional celebrations similar to the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Chinese New Year’s Eve – 17 February
Chinese New Year’s Eve is a time for families. Houses are cleaned and swept, clearing out the previous year’s bad luck. Evil spirits are kept away by leaving on all the lights in the house throughout the night and hanging red cloth around the door.

On Chinese New Year’s Eve, temples are filled with visitors praying for luck and happiness in the coming year.

First Day - Chinese New Year’s Day – 18 February
New Year’s Day is a time for people to stay at home and celebrate with their families, eating lucky foods and exchanging lucky red packets.

Second Day - Dog’s Birthday – 19 February
Traditionally, all dogs turn a year older on the second day of the New Year. Take the time to spoil your dog on this day and wish them a happy birthday!

Third and Fourth Days – 20 & 21 February
These days were set aside in the past for Son-In-Laws visit to pay respect to their Parents-In-Law.

Fifth Day – 22 February
People stay at home on the fifth day of the New Year period to welcome the God of Wealth into their homes. Don’t visit friends or family though – it will bring bad luck to everyone.

Sixth to Tenth Days – 23-27 February
These days are set aside for visits to friends and family and to temples to pray for good fortune in the coming year.

Seventh Day – 24 February
In former times, the seventh day of the New Year period was considered the birthday of all people, with long noodles eaten to symbolise a long life.

Ninth Day – 26 February
On this day, offerings are made to the Jade Emperor to ensure a good year to come.

Tenth to Twelfth Days – 27 February to 1 March
Friends and relatives should be invited to dinner for New Year banquets on these days.

Thirteenth Day – 2 March
After all the banqueting of the previous two days, the thirteenth day of the New Year period is set aside to eat a simple rice congee.

Fifteenth Day – 4 March
The final day of the New Year period is the Lantern Festival, with colourful lanterns on display.

New Year Traditions
Just like New Year’s resolutions in Western culture, there are many beliefs and customs associated with Chinese New Year.

Greet people with “Kung Hei Fat Choy” (Happy New Year) during the Chinese New Year period to bring you good fortune and prosperity.

Clean your house and sweep out the bad luck of the previous year.

Cast aside old grudges and earn reconciliation and forgiveness.

Ward off bad luck by draping your door with red cloth and leaving lights on throughout Chinese New Year’s Eve.

Eat lucky foods like fish and chicken for a prosperous New Year.

Give red “lucky money” envelopes to pass on prosperity and good luck.

Do good deeds to earn the blessings of the Jade Emperor.

I have a red fan hanging in the living room and a flute with red ribbon hanging from an exposed beam.
Ever heard of Feng Shui?
That was more for Wesley and other doubters than you Chicken. ;\)
Just a quick addition. A lot of the traditions are similar to almost any philosophy/religion/belief system that are out there. What's the difference between giving an envelope to someone to please the Jade God and giving 10% of your earnings to a church that doesn't need it or simply doing something good because you believe in Karma?

Feng Shui is terrific. When I move I'm going to use the principles in Feng Shui, I have 3 books and a compass to use for placement of items. Along with the color red, water and mirrors are very important in Feng Shui.
