SCI FI To Air New Doctor Who

SCI FI Channel announced Jan. 12 that it will air the first season of the BBC's hit SF series Doctor Who, starting in March. The 13 episodes, starring Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, will air as part of SCI FI Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The series, from head writer and executive producer Russell T. Davies, ran originally in the United Kingdom last year and was one of the network's biggest hits ever. An update of the classic Doctor Who show, the series continues in the U.K. with an upcoming second season that will star David Tennant as the Doctor.

"The Doctor's made all sorts of journeys in time and space, but this is one of his most exciting yet!" Davies said in a statement. "I'm a huge fan of the SCI FI Channel, and I'm delighted that Doctor Who is appearing on a channel that supports and enhances the entire genre."

"With its rich history of imaginative storytelling, Doctor Who is a true sci-fi classic," Thomas P. Vitale, SCI FI's senior vice president, programming and original movies, said in a separate statement. "We're excited to add the show to our lineup."

Meanwhile, BBC Video announced that it has moved the proposed U.S. release date of the Doctor Who first-season DVD set to July 4 from its originally planned February launch.

I was introduced to the Doctor by a young lady in England.Tom Baker was the Doctor then. I enjoyed it so much she knitted me a Dr. Who Scarf that I wore until it literally fell apart.

I wanted one.

I remember the St. Louis CIA (Celestial Intervention Agency) used to be on the air during breaks in the show talking about what the producers was doing and what to look for. This was pre-internet days so we listened very closely when these guys were on. They were the official fan club in St. Louis.

I used to watch the series on our local PBS until the BBC charged to much for letting PBS to support the airing of the series That must have been in the 80s as I would watch it after school let out

They shows mostly the tom baker doctor and were starting to show the curly red headed doctor with the red question mark pin that thought celery was the cure for everything

I saw everything that still exsisted at the time. Our PBS was dedicated and aired the entire run at least 3 times. I understand some prints have been found and restored that they thought were missing. The BBC wasn't all that careful about archiving the early episodes.

Yeah. Probester has a few "found" episodes they put out. Kind of fun to watch "new old" episodes like that. One story has a 45 minute segment that is still missing except that someone with a old open reel recorder taped the audio off the air. That, in combonation with still prints, lets you follow the story. It's wild.

About the only thing that I'm slightly bummed out about is that this has pushed back the release date for the DVDs of the season until a few months later. I was primed and ready to buy in February. Guess I still can from Amazon CA.

You know, this sort of thing comes up pretty often on the web. Fact of life is that often someone wanting to post some information on a subject doesn't have the time to ransack a forum to see if an appropriate thread exists. In this case, I had no idea that a "Dr Who" thread was already around. It's off in "Social Scene" where it never would have occurred to me to look for it. This was just a little bit of TV news I wanted to get out to folks.
