I'm not really in need of the second two fixes, in fact there are implications in the article that say the hddr fix could lead to data loss.

Just downloaded and began using the "Tweak UAC" program, this could truly save me a postal moment. Not sure how well it will work now that I've installed SP1, but I'm giving it a try.

Warning: Use at your own risk, if you aren't sure whats trying to get elevated permissions, don't let it run.

Wow cool, does Tweak UAC allow you to stop the annoying user admin prompts?

SP1 took forever to install on my laptop, and I didn't notice anything had changed really, stuff still runs as slow as ever.

Not completely, but its supposed to cut down on the frequency of the popups. Haven't done anything to really test it yet. Here's a screenie.

It does give you the option to turn them off completely, but I wouldn't recommend it.

cool smile

oh, another thing too, SP1 was not detected by WIndows Update. I actually had to go in and manually click on that link above to get VIsta SP1. I was surprised windows update didn't detect it.

must be because its new or something

Service pack 1 will not install if you have certain drivers that cause trouble with sp1 smile Microsoft knows about this and wont release the service pack to users who have these problems and in that case you need to check your drivers and download the sp1 manually smile

ok, I just installed tweak-UAC, and I set it to "quiet mode"
now Vista security prompts me with an X saying that UAC is turned off. how do I get rid of the red X icon in the system tray?

if I put it in quiet mode, Vista says UAC is turned off when its not. that is annoying.

I'll have to do a little searching, mine isn't doing that. It's in quiet mode and its quiet.

It still gives me at least one prompt when copying files over to protected areas. I haven't received one prompt while installing anything yet though. smile I like it.

I doubt it'll really be that much when it's released. It's just funny that even MS is admitting that this OS is a failure. It's just about as bad as the Windows ME debacle.

No matter how long it takes, I just hope we get a fully cooked biscuit this time and not a wad of dough. smile When we get through the move to Texas and I have time to sit and fiddle with my computers again, I'm seriously considering formatting Vista off the second drive and just using it for storage. Thats about what I use it for now. I rarely boot to vista anymore, after SP1 didn't deliver a serious compatibility improvement. On some of my gaming boards I've read where it actually broke game installations that were working before the service pack.

Xp keys will still be available until June 30th, stock up people, it could be a long haul.

It has been extended for the "Ultra low cost PC".

Microsoft extends XP pre-installs to ultra-low-cost PC category

..."Microsoft has announced that it will allow OEMs to continue to pre-install Windows XP Home instead of Vista onto a specific category of ultra-low-cost PCs (ULCPCs) until June 30, 2010 or one year after the general availability of the next Windows OS whichever comes first.

ULCPCs are an emerging market targeted at students, first-time PC buyers, and customers who want a cost-effective machine for browsing the Internet, checking email and other basic computing tasks. ULCPCs typically feature smaller screens and form factors, lower power consumption, CPU speeds of 500MHz -- 1GHz, and flash memory drives with 2GB -- 8GB of storage.

"One thing we've heard loud and clear, from both our customers and our partners, is the desire for Windows on this new class of devices. We are enthusiastic about this category because it enables us to bring the benefits of Windows to more customers," said Michael Dix, general manager of Windows Client Product Management.

Windows XP will be discontinued on all other PC categories by June 2008. Microsoft will offer mainstream technical support for XP until April 2009, and extended support until April 2014. "...

I've read elsewhere where OEM's will be allowed to use the oem version in system builds until January 2009. But I can't confirm that.

Windows XP: Going, going ... gone?

..."Microsoft has already made changes in its timetables. Last year, the company extended the sales life cycle -- the time during which PC manufacturers and system builders could sell computers with XP installed -- to June 30, 2008. It will stop selling XP altogether on Jan. 31, 2009. And it extended the mainstream support period for XP to April 14, 2009, in an effort to reassure customers made nervous by the long delays in shipping Vista."...

Never discontinue a popular model. It's bad business, but they are so rich they let arrogance override this. That's my impression...
