I got the last of my Christmas/Father's Day stuff and have set up shop. I have a new DVD Recorder and have been going to town archiving all of my Mystery Science Theatre from the VHS tapes I made all those years ago. I don't know how many episodes I actually have and some of these tapes have never been played after they were recorded. So far I have 11 episodes burnt.

You should see some of the commercials! How about a game called Burn Cycle, Prodigy, AOL, or Windows 95!

Ok... Part of my extra Christmas bonus (ahem) went into buying more blanks and the project was supposed to be on again. The problem is the recorder is shutting down after a few hours running like it's overheating. Right now the lid is off and all the heat shields are warm but not fry an egg mode No real dust either. Hmm....

Check your vcr belts - Alot of times on older machines when the belts get old it will start shutting off the vcr. Also check the tapes, as tapes that are too tight will do this as well on older vcrs.

If you can rewind a tape and forward fast it without playing it then I would check the belts. Usally if you cant rewind a tape and it shuts off while rewinding, its time to buy a new vcr or get a tape rewinder

Oh I'm sorry. The VCR is fine, it's the DVD recorder that's shutting down.

I've been playing a DVD over and over again and it keeps humming along. Apparently only when it records does it fail. And of course it ruins a disk when it does.

Is the dvd recorder in a computer or one of those stand alone models? The reason I ask is if it is in a computer, set your burn speed to a lower setting and try burning it again. Also make sure the burn speed matches the dvd media your recording with or falls below it if it keeps making coasters.

If it is in a regular standalone dvd recorder then maybe the brand of dvd recordable media your using is incompatible and you should try another brand. The dvd recorder manual should tell you what kind of dvd r's to record with.

Make sure your dvd software is up to date as well if your using a computer.

If your using a computer and have 2 cd drives chained together, make sure you have one set to master and one to slave.

I have hours and hours and hours of MST3K tapes and I now have a DVD recorder. I should put them all on DVD. I could get 4 per disc and retain decent quality.

It's a stand alone model from Sanyo. It gives no warning. I start a recording session and the next thing I know the record light is still on but the unit itself is off and the clock is back on the display. I have to turn it on again to get the display back on the counter. But it will play all day long.

These disks are the same that I've been using so far without problems. I have a pile of stuff recorded before this problem started and never had a failed disk 'till now.

Have you tried other brands of media? It could be that, it's not an overheating issue as the same amount of heat should be generated either playing or recording. It could be a firmware issue as well. When I start backing up my MST3K library I'll let you know and see if you want copies.

I just don't know, but I don't have the disks to troubleshoot much more. I'm setting myself up to use the computer's capture card to continue the project. I just need a S-Video cable that will reach. I have one but finding it is proving difficult...

I've been copying some of my library of MST3K to DVD with the settop DVD recorder with some good success. So far I've finished The Deadly Mantis, She Creature, Mole People and I'm recording The Thing That Couldn't Die. God it's good to watch these again. It just makes me wish I could've started recording these long ago as I only have the last two seasons.

actually, I have a similar problem with my fairly recient VHS player/recorder. On some tapes, it will rewind/fast forward ok, but then when you press "play" the tape will be too tight, or something, and it just shuts off. The other VCR's in my house will play the same tape just fine, but the one in the bedroom if the tape is too tight, the VCR will just shutdown and sometimes I'll have to turn it back on 2-3 times to get it to play. strange eh?

One thing I don't like about these new VCR's, you can't "dub" movies anymoore from VCR to VCR, otherwise the sound doesn't come out in the copy I have this very OLD VCR laying around from the early 80's for that very reason, its the only VCR I have that will let me "dub" a movie, but its not a 4 head like the others in the house are

yes I still "dub" movies from time to time because moving from VCR to CD just doesn't work for me ever.

How do you get a VHS tape out of a VHS recorder when it gets stuck? I put a blank videotape in my VHS player, and now its stuck, can't get it out, just keeps making a 'clicking' sound, is there a way to get the tape out of there? I figured out how to take the cover off, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the tape out.

Just in case anyone is interested in this little cow-town puppet show the head photographer from the series, Michael Kienitz, has posted several still images from the filming of the movie that no one has seen before.

Go to:

Usally pushing it in again will unjam it if it does not eject the first time.

Good spoof of Chris Crocker. Look at the Chris Crocker and Chewie one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztRJYzYH6HE&mode=related&search=

Someone just needs to amputate Crocker's head but I thought Chewie had alot to add to the debate.

I get the MST3K email news from the SATELLITE NEWS website. Some of it is real interesting. This came in today:

Ken Plume over at Quick Stop Entertainment has posted another lengthy
MST3K interview, this time with Frank Conniff. Head on over to the
following address:
http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/2007/09/18/interview-frank-conniff

Brian Eggert, a Minnesota native and movie reviewer at the Deep Focus
Review web site, has started the "Mystery Science Theater 3000 Award."
This is an award he gives to movies he reviews which are so bad that, in
his words, rating them with zero stars "just isn't low enough." You can
read about the first "MST3K Award" for the movie "Dragon Wars" at:
http://deepfocusreview.com/Reviews/dragonwars.asp

*Brian*

I just got this email tonight. Some of you may find this interesting:

We are excited to announce some very big news for MST3K fans.

But first, some housekeeping: For reasons that will become apparent, we need
to ask those of you who reach our site using the URL MST3K.com to update your
bookmarks, and please use the URL MST3Kinfo.com. Many of you use this URL
already, but if you get to us via MST3K.com, starting next week you won't be able
to anymore.

The reason is that, next week, MST3K.com will become a new destination for a
brand new site, created by a reconstituted, relaunched Best Brains Inc.

Or, as they put it when they contacted us about this: "The 'Bots are Back!"

Beginning November 5th, BBI will be launching its very own website at
MST3K.com. The site will feature brand-new animated adventures of Crow, Tom Servo and
Gypsy. We're told the goal is to have one new adventure each week (though
"some settling may occur with shipping," they added). The Web site will also
feature work from the original series (which BBI is now calling "the legacy
series"), behind-the-scenes footage and other material culled from the BBI vault.

Also on the site will be BBI's first online store, featuring all new
merchandise. (This means that the BBI merchandise section of our site will be taken
down. )

The new adventures of the 'bots are being produced by BBI President, MST3K
series writer and the returning voice of Gypsy, Jim Mallon. He will be joined on
this new experiment by veteran MST3K series writer and performer Paul Chaplin
(who will be on the writing team and will be providing the voice of Crow)
along with new writing and performing talent.

We know this is going generate a lot of buzz among the fan base and you all
probably have a zillion questions. So do we. Many will be answered on Nov. 5th.
More will be answered soon after. Jim told us that the site and project "are
going to grow in a very organic fashion and we're going to let the characters
and the story take us in the direction they want to take us." We at Satellite
News can't wait to see it.

What does this mean for Satellite News? The biggest change is that we will no
longer be known as "The official MST3K Web site," and this marks the end of
our 10-year arrangement with Best Brains as the official voice of the old Info
Club. Jim has, however, declared us, "The Official MST3K fan site." We still
have close ties to BBI and whenever they have news you'll see it here first,
along with news about the rest of the former cast and crew members of our
favorite cowtown puppet show. For us, this is just one more topic in the growing
list of MST3K-related news it's our job to report.

We have some interesting plans for our site as well, so be sure to stay tuned!

More news today:

After we posted that the 'bots are back, you may have asked yourself,
"We know what Mike, Kevin, Bill, Jim and Paul are doing, but what about
Joel, Trace, Frank, Mary Jo and Josh?" Well, here's your answer...

Cinematic Titanic

So what is Cinematic Titanic? In a nutshell, Joel and the gang have
secured the rights to 12 bad, MST-quality films. They will all be
writing and performing new riffs, with silhouettes. The plan is to offer
downloadable and burnable DVDs through the site -- sort of one-stop
shopping.

We're told that while there will be an overall premise to the show,
there won't be many "host segments" or the like. And the silhouette
won't be of people in theater seats. Instead, it will consist of people
up on scaffolding on the side of the screen...as seen in the Cinematic
Titanic logo.

The date and title of the first release have yet to be announced, but
you can be the first to recieve the news by signing up for the Cinematic
Titanic newsletter. Just visit Cinematic Titanic for more
information.

From Joel and the Titanic staff today:

 Quote:
I’m glad to report that the DVD of “Cinematic Titanic’s The Oozing Skull” has been delivered to the homes of the some of the early buyers, and the reviews are great– so far… I don’t want to jinx it or anything… so I’ll just whisper.

Now that our creation/production/distribution/web machine seems to be functioning, we here at Cinematic Titanic are in “Publicity Mode”. It’s now our job to get the word out to everyone that our new feature length DVD is ready and waiting to be purchased, enjoyed and ultimately appraised by you and your wisecrack loving friends and family!

If you know people that are MST3K-curious, please let them know this– that the original cast of the show has landed here and are making a shimmery new movie riffing experience. If you’re a member of the press and are interested in more info or would like to do an article or review, please get in touch with our press contact, Josh Opitz at joshopitz@gmail.com — he’ll treat you right! Our press release is located in “The News” section for you do-it-yo-selfers. Start spreading the news…

New news from the Titanic:

Quote:
CINEMATIC TITANIC LIVE IN L.A.

We've been invited by the LA Film Festival to perform live at the Ford Amphitheater on June 21st. We're thrilled to be able to play this beautiful venue (1,241 seats in a beautiful outdoor setting in the Hollywood Hills).

We'll be riffing live to Roger Corman's "The Wasp Woman" which we premiered last month in Dallas to reviews like the following:

They performed to the tune of Roger Corman's The Wasp Woman, and folks, I've got to tell you, I haven't laughed that hard (or that often) in a long time. The experience of being in the theater while these wiseacres are doing their thing is something I will treasure always."

- John P. Meyer - Pegasus News - Dallas Ft. Worth

For ticket and show info for the LA show visit: http://www.lafilmfest.com/
Tickets for individual events go on sale June 2nd.

(Our field trip to the John Ford theatre, pictured just to right of the canopy is: Producer/director Stoney Sharp, J Elvis, Frank, Trace. Photo by Joel)

That's all for now. Enjoy the trailer!

From the official schedule:

See what will be happening this year at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 25!

7:15-8:15 Mystery Science Theater 3000 20th Anniversary Reunion— From 1988 to 1999, the long-suffering captives aboard the Satellite of Love wisecracked their way through hundreds of cinema's problem children—those delirious B-movies of yesteryear created by twisted imaginations and, possibly, the need for a tax shelter. To celebrate the show's 20th Anniversary, join a historic reunion of cast and crew, including creator Joel Hodgson, producer Jim Mallon and fellow writer/performers Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, Mary Jo Pehl, Paul Chaplin, J. Elvis Weinstein, Bridget Nelson, and Bill Corbett for a Q&A panel hosted by self-professed "MST3K nerd" and comedian Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens). Room 6B

News from Cinematic Titanic:

Quote:
Greetings,

It's been very busy around here at Cinematic Titanic, but a good kind of busy. First off, we've been working on the new batch of shows for the fall and winter. As you may have heard: we're planning on settling into a delivery schedule of a new show every six weeks or so. Which means, we'll have our new offering "The Wasp Woman" available AUGUST 7th.

This week we're shooting interviews for the much-anticipated Mystery Science Theater 20th anniversary box set. The producers at "Shout Factory" asked us to come to the shoot, "camera ready" and dressed as "we'd want our children and grandchildren to see us". So, I'm curious, how exactly do you pick out an outfit for something like that? And this weekend, Trace, Josh, Frank, Mary Jo and I will be traveling to San Diego to attend Comic-con on and do a special panel celebrating the 20th anniversary of MST3K. Which is also being taped for the 20th anniversary box set. It's going to feel like Christmas in July! I can't wait to watch Trace and Frank walk through the dealer's room together and cause some major MSTie frenzy! Please come by and say hello if you happen to be at the con.

Also, we just booked an unbelievably great (and huge) venue for Cinematic Titanic Live in St. Louis called Family Arena on November 1st, which is exactly a week after our homecoming show in Minneapolis at the State Theater on October 25th. Tickets will be on sale very soon.

OMG they are coming to St. Louis!

A recent broadcast of the Olympics in Helena and other Montana communities had some unusual spectators — from a television show canceled a decade ago.

The Internet has been abuzz over the accidental and seemingly innocuous superimposition of characters from Mystery Science Theater 3000 over the high-definition showing of the Olympics on Sunday afternoon by KTVH, NBC’s affiliate in parts of Montana.

For about an hour of the coverage, the screen was bordered on the bottom by a silhouette of the show’s three main characters — a man and his two robot sidekicks.

In the storyline of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the characters were trapped on a satellite in space and forced to watch horrible movies, mainly science fiction B-movies.

The silhouette of the characters broadcast Sunday were static and therefore did not make the mocking remarks they usually did during the presentations.

The incident, which reportedly appeared from 2 p.m. until 3:13 p.m. and was isolated to Helena, was apparently first written about online by the blogger “Dirty Red Commie,” who recorded it to prove he had not “lost his mind."

New news from the MST3K planet:

Quote:
We wanted to let you know about latest bit of shameless capitalism: The MST3K Catchphrases T-shirt store.

The idea came to me after our recent weekend discussion thread, where we listed the many many many phrases that have been made popular by the show. It occurred to me that what MSTies would love would be shirts that proudly and boldly proclaimed a phrase that would make 90 percent of general public say “Huh?” and the other 10 percent say, “Hey! One of my own kind!”

Now, we know the economy’s tough, so with your wallet in mind, we're offering the most inexpensive -- white -- T-shirt CafePress offers (it’s still 100 percent cotton; I bought one myself and I think it’s a good-quality shirt) and we are only charging two smackers over the base price. There are more than 130 phrases to choose from.
Check them out here: http://www.cafepress.com/MST3KPhrases

Meanwhile, another article of the mysterious Olympic sighting:

Quote:
One of my favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 lines came during the movie City on Fire, when, as a woman is gong into labor, Crow T. Robot yells: "Get a catcher's mitt!" It's hard to believe that it's been eight years since MST3K was canceled on the SciFi channel; but for about four hours during the Olympics, it was back. Kind of.

Yeah... So weird...

Quote:
THINK YOU HAVE issues with your mother? Alexis Stewart, the only kid of domestic doyenne Martha Stewart, has you beat. Sure, the younger Stewart loves her mom, but that doesn't keep her and co-host Jennifer Koppelman Hutt from poking fun at her old TV segments on the new Fine Living Network show "Whatever, Martha!" (Tues., 9 p.m.)

» EXPRESS: Who had the idea for this show?
» STEWART: It was Martha. She can't sleep at night, and she stays up watching "Mystery Science Theater 3000." She said, "You girls should do this." And there's nothing more fun than making fun of your mother.

» EXPRESS: The vintage clips are hysterical. How are they chosen?
» STEWART: The show producers choose them.

» JKH: Yeah, that way what we say when we're watching them is fresh and unscripted.

» EXPRESS: What's the easiest thing to make fun of?
» JKH: When Martha has props, it's sometimes really funny. In one clip, she was exercising with a Persian cat on her back. So we called it a [censored] party!

» STEWART: I love that one. And I think it's easier for Jennifer to dart it off when she's making fun of my mother. I don't necessarily feel comfortable saying, "That's a nice Persian [censored]."

» EXPRESS: What else do you target?
» JKH: Well, some of the things Martha does don't seem humanly possible. And then, in some older segments, things seem dated. We've done some laughing at hairstyles.

Tentatively as long as the (now) venerable VCR holds out, the project is on again. Just a few more tapes to go really.

The transport on the VCR get's stuck when it tries to eject a tape, but everything else works (knock on wood). You have to help it get the tape out. Oh well...

Ha! And now neither do I!

As of tonight the Mystery Science Theater Project is done. Every S-VHS recording I have is now duped to DVD. I have a few tapes left with duplicate recordings and I'll dupe them off if they are better quality than the ones I already did but the episode count is done. I need to organize them and inventory by episode numbers. I know it's not complete but it's a huge chunk of the show's run. And perhaps a few missing episodes can be found on used DVD's. That's how I got my copy of #515, The Wild World Of Batwoman. Oh yeah, that one is way bad...

I need to get time to organize the disks by season and episode yet so I can get a list of haves/have nots. Such a daunting task when you're busy though! I know I have 2 DVD folders full... That must be something like 100 disks!

Just my luck... I thought about a Christmas self-gift on that one. Oh well...

How did you convert them? Do you have a tv tuner card in your computer?

How long did it take?

I did it the old fashion way and played the tapes directly into a DVD recorder. No fancy menus or nothing, just the basics. If I want to put together a special presentation I can rip the files off the disk and edit that, but for now I don't need to. I guess since I've been using this thread as my blog for the project I see I started this June 2005. I had some down time where the equipment wasn't in the same room and when the original DVD recorder quit. Without these pauses I would have been done much sooner.

Would depend if it was a standard dvd/double sided, dual layer/double sided disc.

It would also depend on his encoding specifications. smile

I worked my way here!

I run the disks in DVD standard, so I get two hours run time per single side. So one episode with the commercials intact fit per disk. And some of the commercials are like gems to themselves!

You didn't edit out the commercials?

Nope. You can riff on them or just fast forward if you like. If I was to edit them it would have had to be done in real time. And it wouldn't have saved enough time to use the rest of the disk for anything anyway.

Do you have the last season on disc? I have the last two seasons on tape that I need to transfer over. I started taping them religiously during the season that featured Agent For H.A.R.M. and The Deadly Mantis. I had seen the show off and on but never really watched it until then.

I have the last season complete. As far as I can tell I have the 4th season as well. The Deadly Mantis came from the 8th season. I got that one.

I attached a text document to this post with the complete list of all the episodes I transferred to DVD. Just in case anyone wanted to see them listed that is!

I think I'm one lucky dude. A good friend sent us a MST3K boxed set for our Anniversary and wanted to know what I thought of it.

So I figure this is a s good a place to talk about it as anywhere.

First of all the tin box looks great. I'm not sure how to describe it though. It's painted in such a way that you can tell it's metal. The shiny-ness of it comes through the printing. It's a nice touch.

On the inside is the actual box set of the four DVD's, plus four collector prints the size of post cards (one for each movie in the collection - I plan to frame mine!), and a Crow T. Robot figurine (you can see all the parts used to make him clearly!)

But the real gem is the DVD's. The first one is 211- FIRST SPACESHIP ON VENUS from the 2nd season. Ambitious movie but it just falls flat... A mysterious spool is found containing a recorded message from Venus and we just happen to have a new space ship ready to go and find out more!

The 2nd is 706- LASERBLAST from the 7th season. I remember seeing this movie in it's un-MST form, but it needed riffing bad. It came out the same year Star Wars did and was blown completely out of the water. Young Billy finds a alien weapon which gives him the revenge he wants against the bullies in his life. Then the weapon mutates him. Poor Billy...

The 3rd is 904- WEREWOLF from the 9th season. Joe Estevez stars in this major miss... Bones of something strange is found in Arizona, and soon lycanthropes live again!

The 4th is 1004- FUTURE WAR from the 10th season. I don't know what this movie is supposed to be. There are cyborgs, human slaves, and rubber dinosaurs. Somehow they are all supposed to fit together. I watched it and still don't know how it's done...

Also on the disks is a three part cast and crew interview, and the legendary appearance of the cast at the 2008 Comic-Con.

My first impression is that this set fits with anyone. If you are a dedicated MSTie or a curious newbie this set works. You can find out all you want about how the show came about and enjoy some fine examples of the riffing art. All the films are in color too. I have noticed that some of the B&W films they used tend to loose peoples interest if they aren't "MSTified" already. Not always...

But if you are a die-hard fan these films have never been released on DVD or in the old VHS series I understand, so they are a catch for your collection. And after 20 years it still holds up like fine wine or Jethro Tull. Classic.

And I am a lucky guy as I never dreamed I could get myself a copy... But the dream is real! smile

I loved the Werewolf episode! The part where they show the wolf skull and Servo does an opera-like "ahhhhhh", that had us laugh our butts off.

I liked the idea of the movie, but the execution... Well it makes good riffing!

Seasons Greetings from Satellite News!

With the holidays upon us, it’s time once again for our annual holiday tradition, A Child’s Christmas in Space by Tom Servo.

Tom: It’s quiet in the cold of our own little orbit, starless and bible black. And as I look down on the big blue bean we would call home I think it so near, yet… oh, I wish on that star and I hope that in a little snow-covered house with a warm hearth and a loving family, maybe some kid is looking up tonight and wishing upon us. Oh, and how I hope sweet Santa will fly by tonight, because if he does I’m gonna reach right out and hug that big guy. Oh, for the sound of hooves against the steel hull of the ship. Oh, to see the rosy face of Santa in the porthole, offering me a Coke and a smile… (gradually becoming upset) …of course, his cheeks WOULD be rosy because it’s a VACUUM out there! I mean, Santa’s HEART would explode! (becoming hysterical) But HE wouldn’t feel it because the capillaries in his brain would pop like little firecrackers (Joel tries to calm him down) due to the blood boiling away in his face like pudding in a copper…OH THE HUMANITY!! (Now both Joel and Crow are trying to calm him down.) And his jolly old belly would start bubbling like a roasted marshmallow, eyes bulging and popping out… AND THE REINDEER–OH THE REINDEER!!!–keep floating like holiday floats and in turn exploding in a hail of blood and entrails! Prancer–BOOM! Dancer–BOOM!…
Joel: HEY!
Crow: Tom!
Joel: Tom, take it easy! Santa’s gonna be okay, buddy.
Tom: You sure?
Joel: Yeah, give him a little credit, okay?
Tom: Phew, what a relief! And it is with that sense of relief that we want to offer you our best wishes for the Swayziest holiday season ever, if that’s okay, and hopes for an amazing colossal new year.
