I just read that at one of my Mac sites, 2007 is the projected year, I dont know if this is a good idea or not ?
But everyone is copying everything apple is doing right now, intel just copied the mini mac , and is using a copy cat of the apple flat screen .
Another company is copying the iPOD , looks like evveryone wants an apple but are afraid of giving up thier windows machine .

Dammit! My G5 will be obsolete in 2007! If Apple was going to do an architecture switch, why did they even go with IBM and the PPC 970? Phasing in 64 bit PPC chips into their product line, and then phasing in x86 chips, is just about stupid!

Apple moving to x86 processors has been rumored for years, but it was never believable. Now that C|Net is reporting it, and the possible announcement date, makes me put some stock into the idea.

It's all about cash. They don't care about you and your needs or that your extreemly expensive IFruit is going out of date in a year so long as they can maximise their profits as much as possible.
You see, if they told everyone they were planning on going with the x86 chips they wouldn't make money off of their current inventory because the smart people would be holding out for the new line of stuff.

I put off getting the computer I have for a year. I almost got a MDD dual G4 PowerMac. I knew that Apple was planning on moving the PowerMac line to IBM PPC 970 chips in the next year. So, I waited.

If this is true, I'll be buying again in 2007.

This may be my stupidity here joseph, but why do you need so much power on a MAC. The only reason I see having a power MAC is if you do some heavy 3d work or making your own home movies , is this why you need all that power?. And there isnt enough games to really play on a MAC.
I would love to have a G5 Dual 2.7 GHz with a 23" display , but 5 thousand bucks is to much for my bragging rights ...LOL.
I may get an iMac G5 20" , but I like the old style better .

I'm not crazy about the iMacs simply because they're hard to upgrade. I got a PowerMac mainly for expandability. All I have to do is pop a latch and the case is open. Plus, I like having a separate display. That way, when I need a new monitor, I can just buy one. I won't have to replace the whole computer.

what ever happened to the Apple Cube ? I thought that was a cool deal..... what killed it ? was it because of a cooling issue , under powered , or what ? I have been to a few mac forums and people that have them sure like them.

The Cube was designed as an executive desk machine, not a family machine. Like the Mini

The Cube was a high-end "froo-froo" desk ornament of a computer. I think it was a wonderful little machine; but high-end, "froo-froo" desk ornaments don't usually make it. I always thought the Cube was a nice compromise between style and power.

The Mac Mini, to me, is for the Wal-Mart generation. It's for teenagers who want a cute little computer with the Apple logo and the eye candy of Mac OS X. I just don't think it's a good value. Yes, it looks cheap up front. For me, though, the specs are unimpressive for the money. It doesn't even come with the basic peripherals like a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. By the time all the necessities are added, the eMac would seem like a much nicer value.

Can you build your own MAC from on line parts like a PC ? or are they just apple built ? I never even looked if you can or not .
I just wish I would of looked into Apple 6 years ago when I got into PC's, I bought the highest dollar Gateway ( at the time ) they had , and 2 months later was outdated. I updated it as far as I could for 2 years, and got real tired of having to buy , buy , buy to keep up with all the new games that required to run them. Plus all the wounderful lock ups , BSoD, updates, bla bla bla , just got so tiring .
I would like to have a top end G5, as I have a wacom Intuos 2- 8" Tablet and would like to buy Photoshop , and the Painter X software , and get back to digital drawing .

It would be very tricky to build a Mac. You'd have to spend a lot of time on eBay to get the parts. All the components are standard, except for the processor and motherboard. Finding the right motherboard with the right ROM would be the most difficult part. The ROM is what makes a Mac a Mac. If Mac OS X doesn't see Apple ROM, it won't even run. The other problem is that you wouldn't be able to have the latest hardware.

Go the easy route and buy a new or used Mac manufactured by Apple. That way, you'll know it runs.

It looks to me--after a Google search--that a G4-based Mac is about the latest Mac you could build.

I have been watching their reconditioned Mac's and man they go fast.
I looked last night and they had a iMAc g5 20" 2GHz with 512 ram , super drive , running tiger for 1499, and its gone today.
I thought of getting the 12" powerbook the have listed with 512 ram , airport extream, blue tooth, for 1499 , but I couldnt talk the wife into it .

If I could sell the motor and trans out of my hot rod , I would buy the G5 dual processor with the 20" monitor now that she would go for !

Macs are great for real high end programs for rendering 3D or editing video and audio but for me, the strictness of the machines turn me off. The total difficulty of doing your own upgrades is a HUGE turn off for me. I would rather spend alot of money on a 64 bit PC and max out everything and get comparable performance if it meant that I can change hardware anytime I wanted to.

I don't want this to turn into a Mac VS PC rant thread but I just think it's too restrictive, expensive and high powered for what the average user will use it for. I mean, I have an old friend that says he's going to wait to build his own website until he can get a Mac. I mean, WTF does THAT mean?! He says that Macs have better templates. I just say that if you are building a template based website you shouldn't be building one to begin with and you can get any template you want without having a Mac just for building websites. This is the mindset that people have about the Macs that irritates me. They're better. Why? just because. OK, this is starting to turn into a rant.

The point I was making is that I am turned off on Macs because of their restrictive nature, their high price and the fact that you can build your own comparable machine for much cheaper or for around the same price and have the freedom to do what you want with it.

Lol - actually, I haven't even ordered it yet.

I've been planning this purchase for over 6 months now, and I'm trying to decide now if I want to wait for the new processors or not.
