Google Now Supporting (Some Call it Underwriting) Popular Public Television Program Although Google has been known for making it's name and brand awareness to this point by primarily using word-of-mouth, viral marketing, and great pr, it's clear that the company is moving into using more traditional techniques to promote its products, services, and reinforce its name and brand in the consumer arena. MediaDailyNews reports that Google is currently sponsoring/underwriting (the actual text of the spot says "supporting") the popular public tv program NOVA that airs on PBS. A 15 second Google video "spot" is seen before each program. A Nova also has a page for Google setup on its site where it's listed as an underwriter and where you can view one of the 15 second announcements (QuickTime, Real, MS Media). You can view the google announcement at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/funders/google.html

Google Offers $1 Billion for 5% of AOL Google has offered to pay $1 billion for a 5 percent stake in America Online, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, effectively pushing Microsoft out of any negotiation with Time Warner. The news marks a major setback to Microsoft's efforts to gain a more even footing with Google in the search industry. If the rumors prove true, it would mean nearly a year's worth of negotiations between Microsoft and AOL would have been for naught. Microsoft had endeavored to convince AOL to drop Google for MSN Search, as well as combine the sales and advertising departments of the two companies.

Government Wants Google Search Data The Bush administration on Wednesday asked a United States federal judge in San Jose, Calif. to order Google to turn over search records from its database. The request stems from a failure by the search giant to comply with a subpoena issued in October. The federal government is attempting to gather data to support a child protection law that was struck down two years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court. Under that law, the government could punish pornography sites that made content easily accessible to minors. However, the Supreme Court found the law too broad, and said that it could restrict the ability of adults to access these sites. It gave the government an opportunity to either rewrite the law or prove that it doesn't violate the First Amendment rights of the Web site owners and visitors

Decided to change the topic since I put all my google stories here Google Censors Chinese Search Results Google on Wednesday launched a Chinese version of its search engine, however as can be expected the company has made some concessions in order to appease the Chinese government. Searches on the topics of human rights, Tibet, the Dalai Lama, and democracy now omit certain Web sites and redirect to Chinese government Web sites. The company defends its actions as a way to make information more accessible in China. However, the company has always prided itself on offering the most open, unadulterated results; Wednesday's move seems to contradict that philosophy. "Google's statements about respecting online privacy are the height of hypocrisy in view of its strategy in China," worldwide press freedom group Reporters Without Borders said in a statement. "Freedom of expression isn't a minor principle that can be pushed aside when dealing with a dictatorship."

Google Zooms In Satellite Map Imagery Google on Tuesday updated the satellite images in its Google Earth software and Google Local search, adding two more zoom levels that provide a close-up birds-eye view of locations around the world. The change comes after Microsoft's Windows Live Local added similar capabilities. "Now for many areas around the world you can see a lot more detail than you could before," said Google Earth team member Chikai Ohazama. "Take a look at people standing at the gates of Buckingham Palace in London, or jump over the pond and see the Statue of Liberty in New York."

Google News Finally Leaves Beta After over three years, Google News is finally leaving its beta status behind and becoming a fully launched product. The site, which aggregates news stories from across the globe automatically, is available in 22 regional editions and 10 languages. With the graduation from beta, Google has added a feature that recommends stories based on previously read subjects. "We've also added a section to show you the most popular stories in the Google News edition you are viewing (e.g., U.S.). Now you can see the top stories being published by editors across the web, as well as other stories popular with readers, plus topics that you track or are interested in -- all on one page," said Google News creator Krishna Bharat.
