There was a book I read about 6 or 7 years ago. I unfortunately misplaced it soon after finishing it at the time. I can't remember the title or the author and hope someone here besides me has read itand can give me that information. I'll try to give a summary from memory.
It's about alternate Earths. The protagonist discovers by accident that anytime he and others use technolgy, they get sent to an alternate Earth. Also, no one in the world has heard anything from the United States in quite a while. So our protagonist heads out with a group to find out what happened to the US.
I hope this helps. It's been bugging me for a few years because I thought it was a pretty good sci fi book. I had found the title and author about 4 years ago, and then misplaced that too. I misplace a lot of things.
Another thing I do remember is that the dust cover (it was a hard cover) was orange and the picture on the front was of Earth. It may have been Earth and it's alternates in a circle.

Doesn't appear to be him. Dang.
I even went to Science Fiction Book Club to do a search. That's where I had got it from. No luck. My luck would be that it was a flop and is totally out of print.

I know how it is. I just found that book I've been looking for for over 12 years called Counter-Clock World by Philip K Dick and it's pretty good.
